Sony PRS-500 vs. Cybook Gen 3

Due to our SA USA MR Hoedown, I dusted off my old beat up PRS-500 and charged it up to have one more reader to show off. Since it was charged up, I looked at the books I had left on it, several of which I had not read yet and came from the Sony Store {fully DRMed}. I decided to read them before storing the 500 again.

I was amazed at the "speed" of opening a book on the 500 vs. the Cybook. Of course I know that some of this is due to the ungodly number of books I have on the Cybook (250+) but still I was amazed. Why does the Cybook take so long to boot up compared to the Sony 500? Any "knowledgeable comments" or just opinions?

The CyBook's boot time does seem to be related to the number of books stored. With 1600 or so, mine takes about two-and-a-half minutes to boot.

I'm guessing that when it starts up it builds some kind of index of the books present. I don't know why it takes such a long time though.

So I tend to only turn mine off at night.

And the Sony does normally not boot in the same sense as the Cybook since it is usually never turned off completely.

Because you're not "booting" the Sony - just switching it out of standby mode. That's why the Sony drains its battery when it's "off", but the CyBook doesn't.

Switch off your PRS-500 by pressing the "Reset" button on the back and THEN do the comparison. I think you'll find that the CyBook "wins" by a considerable margin then .
