Calibre 3.6 can't find my new Kindle Paperwhite 4

Just been given a new Kindle Paperwhite 4 for Christmas, but Calibre doesn't recognise it. Checked all the recommendations in the mobileread forum, I can see the device in Windows, device is not disabled. I have attacked the Calibre debug output. All suggestions gratefully received. |

Upgrade to the latest version of Calibre and it'll work fine. The version of Calibre you're using pre-dates the release of the PW4, hence it doesn't support it.

Ar far as I know I AM riunning the latest version. Anyway, I tried to install the latest version and got options to Change, Repair or Uninstall, which seems to indicate my version is current. There is a Kindle 2/3/4/Paperwhite Device Interface option in my Plug-Ins, and the icon is Green. If I'm not running the latest version of Calibre, what should my main screen show? It curently shows Calibre 3.6 (64bit). |

It is recognised on my laptop, but not my desktop. When I start Calibre on the desktop, it doesn't prompt me to upgrade, which it did when I started it on the laptop, so I hope that means I'm running the current version. Is there a setting somewhere in Calibre which has somehow focused on my old Kindle, and won't recognise any others? It shows 3.6 on the main screen of my desktop, and 3.36 on my laptop. It also shows 3.6 in the debug output. Is 3.6 older than 3.36, or is it the same thing displayed two different ways? |

			3.6 (04 Aug 2017) is 30 releases older than 3.36 (21 Dec 2018).

3.6 is 30 versions older than 3.36, and that's the reason that the PW4 isn't being recognised. You need to install the current version, as I said in my first post.

I deleted and re-installed Calibre, and that fixed it. Don't know why it wouldn't upate automatically, but it's now working fine. Thanks for all your help and a Happy New Year to one and all.

I always get thrown by this numbering system. I think of 3.6 as "3.6.0" and 3.36 as "3.3.6." I know that's wrong, but that's how I see it — until I take a closer look.

It always takes me a long while to realize that 3.6 is really 3.06. | |

Don’t think of “3.36” as a decimal number, but as a shorthand notation for “Major version number 3, minor version number 36”.
