[Kobo] Unknown title
Hi! I am new to Calibre and used it with my new Kobo Clara HD. Two books I sent, one in PDF and one in ePub, display their titles correctly in the library view but when I send them to the device the titles show up as 'Unknown'. I have tried searching the forums but couldn't find anything about this. Does anyone know why this is happening? I am sorry if this has been asked several times already and if this is the wrong forum to ask this question, I am not only a new Calibre user but also a new user of the forums

Have you configured your calibre Kobo driver (whichever one of KoboTouch or KoboTouchExtended you're currently using) to update metadata?
If you're using latest calibre 3.35, enable checkboxes on tab 'Metadata, on-device & advanced' for both: - Update metadata on the device - Update metadata on Book Details pages. The other thing to be aware of for users new to Kobo is that transferring metadata is usually a 2-part process. First connect to calibre: use send-to-device to transfer new books. Then safely disconnect and the Kobo will add new book entries in the Kobo database. A few metadata fields (author, title, comments, ...) will be populated either via extract from the book's internal files or from a metadata plugboard if you're using one. Second (and subsequent) connect to calibre: the calibre driver will auto-magically update metadata in the Kobo database using your latest calibre metadata (author, title, series, publication date, etc ...) The moral of the story: always do a second calibre connect before concluding that metadata isn't being transferred correctly. |

To let me see what is happening, in the driver configuration, put the name of the errant book in the "Title to test when debugging" field on the third tab. It doesn't need to be the full title, just something that will match the book without matching to many others (i.e. don't use "the"). Then run calibre in debug mode (right-click the preferences button and select "Restart in debug mode"), let the device connection jobs run and then close calibre. Calibre will display the log. Then post or PM the complete log to me. |

I am seeing this issue as well since latest update. On device view all titles are unknown, but titles are properly communicated to device and back. Kobo Aura 2.

The first time I had 'Unknown' on the device as well, but now it seems to display the right title.

I have the same problem with the title "unknown" and the size is 0.
I've send MP with the debug log to davidfor to help. I've used Calibre 3.35 i KoboTouchExtended. Until now (calibre 3.35) it was working ok. Thanks to davidfor. |

All books have "Unknown" in the title? Are these shown as linked to books in the library? What book formats do you have?

About the questions for SapereAude, who explains the same what happens to me:
All the books new transfered to device have "Unknown" in the title, the previous books on device had the correct original title. Yes, there are marked as linked. The format is epub, and kepub in device. |

To those who have sent me a debug log, thank for that. I gave me the clue as to what was the problem. From that, I can reproduce the problem.
The problem happens when metadata management is not set to automatic and a book is sent to the device. Changing the setting of metadata management to automatic will solve the problem. This is on the "Sending books to devices" page of the calibre preferences. As rule, I recommend this setting to be used. Without it, collection management and metadata updating will not be done when you connect the device. It does add extra time to the connection, but, unless you have many thousands of books on the device, it is still fairly quick. I'll fix it as soon as I can, but, until the fix is released, I recommend changing to automatic management. To fix the problem for books recently sent to the device, you can either resend them, after changing the setting, or remove the metadata.calibre file from the root directory of the device and running calibre. Or you can download to an older version of calibre. Edit: I've worked out what was wrong. I just need to test the fix a little more. Last edited by davidfor; 12-12-2018 at 08:58 AM. |
