Categories on Sony Reader
I have a bunch (about 400) ebooks that are on my computer in the Sony format and I'd like to put them in catagories on the reader. They are all in catagories in separate folders on the computer and I've created these same catagories on the reader.
The problem is that you have to drag the folders from the computer...let's say "westerns" to the "library" on the ebook library. You can't drag them straight to the "westerns" folder I made in the library. This is fine if you only have one catagory. Now when you drag "mysteries", you have to drag it to the "library" and they are now mixed up with the westerns. You have to manually pick them out to put in the "mysteries folder. I've tried every trick in book. Is there a secret I don't know???? |

Welcome to MobileRead, crawdad!
![]() You can actually drag the category itself between the Reader and Library software (either direction). But since that only helps with moving the whole category, and with as much content as you're talking about, I'd second CharlieBrown's suggestion of looking into Calibre -- it's a much more versatile system of managing books than the Sony software ever thought about being. ![]() |

I'm going to go with what was already posted. Calibre is one fine program, prior to the SONY firmware update I used it exclusively. However I am finding I am using SONY's program more and more these days since the LRF load up times differences are huge.
To answer your question I actually don't use the SONY Connect Library, I tend to load the eBooks directly to the card, as a result the date stamp on the file is the date added to the Sony Reader. Then if you sort by date you will get a list of the most reacently added eBooks. However if you wish to use the Library One trick I've found when loading multiple files into the SONY Connect software is use the sort "by Remaining" option. I have no idea what the mean "by Remaining" but it seems to sort by the latest added files. Then you can promptly load the books into the right category. |

But, by using Calibre to do it, you will have to wait for each and every book you have to format when you first view it and then again every time you change the font size.

And how long does that take? The software is already slower than Christmas.

i'm guessing remaining means remaining space since that file was added? A weird cat to store. |

It's "remaining time" and is only applicable to time-limited books.

I have Calibre and I still can't figure out how to put books in categories. What's the secret?

Don't the 'tags' get copied to the Sony as categories?

(Under Edit meta information) Tags and Series... Though with Series you have the added benefit of being able to number the books. If you already have the books on your Reader just resend them and it'll update them.
So Tags are good for genres, like Fantasy or Romance, and for setting up groups like "Group Read" or "Lit203 Class". Series is good for any consecutive grouping like a book series, Discworld or Darkover for instance, a trilogy or as short as a novel and its sequel. I would recommend if you have alot of books to not try to create Series for each trilogy or arc in a larger series, such as Shannara. Just pick a reading order and number the books all together, otherwise you may end up with an unwieldy amount of Categories. -MJ Last edited by mjh215; 11-29-2008 at 07:56 AM. |
