Calibre not converting one AZW3 to PDF

Hi all, I am new here and very much appreciating the Calibre app and the options that it represents,

My prime interest currently is to remove DRM protection on my numerous veterinary Kindle-texts so that I can save them effectively, but also to convert some of the larger ones (original Kindle azw3 file sizes of 20 to 40 MB) into pdf files that I can subsequently split into various chapters to ease their viewing and manipulation by my iPad iOS Kindle app,

I have so far successfully converted one text from AZW3 to PDF and thence using the Google Chrome print-to-pdf function, was able to save as chapters, so job done there very nicely.

However I have another identical format Kindle text, which is larger at 36 MB, and am experiencing the following when trying to convert it from AZW3 to PDF:

it starts normally, and then rapidly jumps from 1% completion through 35% and 40% completion to 47% completion, all within a minute or two, where it then stays for up to approx. 75 minutes of conversion time, at which point, in two successive tries, I have quit and shut the application down, assuming that it was stalled and wouldn't complete the conversion.

Am I wrong? Should I just leave the application running beyond one hour to allow it to finish? It certainly drives the processors a lot as the computer's fans are on full speed/time and this is a Lenovo P50 laptop workstation with Quad core Xeons and 16 GB RAM, so that seems odd.

If Calibre isn't able to complete a conversion to PDF, will it tell me at some point? It seems to me that it should at least move beyond 47% by one hour's time . . . No?

cheers, thanks, appreciate any help, is the file size simply too large? I doubt this,

One question is are you running the 32 or 64 bit version of calibre? Back when I was using the 32bit version, I had several conversion issues that were basically Windows/calibre running out of memory.

Not sure if this will work, but you could try restarting calibre in debug mode and then seeing if you get a useful log file out of the conversion (click on the arrow on the right of preferences and then "Restart in debug mode").

Nice computer. I love my new P52 though my old W530 was a very decent machine.

leave it running. conversion jobs dont stall. For pathological cases conversion has been known to take up to 48 hrs. And progress percentages are not really linear, so you can tuse them as a guide.
