prs-505 or 700?

Hi folks,

I am asking Santa Claus for a Sony Ebook reader. Now the big question I have is should i get a 505 which is available locally (ireland) or wait until mid november and stump up the additonal cash for a 700 and import one from the US?

I have a good idea of whats changed between models - but has the music playing funcion been improved at all in the 700? Am i right in thinking the music organisation on the 505 is pretty poor - just giving track listings with no albums/artist sorting?

I would appreciate any input into the decision making process - would there be any issues with importing the 700 from the US?

Cheers,
Michael

You have no warranty support if you do so, that's the main issue. Bear in mind that you'll have to pay VAT and perhaps import duty too when it arrives, which will significantly increase the price.

Even the cheapest dedicated MP3 player is massively superior to any eBook reader for playing music. Use the right tool for the job - play music on an MP3 player, and read books on a book reader.

indeed.. have a dedicated mp3 player already..

i am leaning towards the 505... for my first ebook i think it will do all i need and will be a less costly expense if i dont like using it as a reader.. as i presume the reading experience on the 505 and 700 remains essentially the same

I'd suggest that you wait awhile. Two posters have claimed already that for some reason the screen quality of the 700 is inferior to the 505.

I love my 505 - it does everything I want a reader to. If you're not fussed about the touch screen and the integral light, I'd say get the 505 - you can always buy either Sony's light cover or a clip on light if you discover you need one.

Mind you, while I don't know which one's you saw, I saw one that came to that conclusion based on the assumption that because the 700 had a touch-screen/side-LEDs, it would have an additional layer of glass/plastic that would make the screen less readable. It wasn't stated, but the impression I got was that the author'd not actually seen a 700 & was just deducing a change.

The Touchscreen is below the Eink substrate. So it was stated few times in the PRS700 forum. Of course nothing is known for sure yet

What I'm basing my opinion on is this and this.

Thanks for the advice.. i'm more than likely going to go with the 505 but i might wait until after some reviews of the 700 come in to see what people say when comparing both

thanks,
mick
