Book Covers not importing

I have been a Calibre user for several years and love the program. I updated to the latest version of Calibre the other day and ever since, when I add a book to my library, it does not import the actual book cover. All of the covers on these new items are the default cover. I have looked, but I cannot find instructions on how to fix this so I do not have to edit the book cover for every single item as it is imported. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Reading of metadata (including covers) from the files is controlled via an option in Preferences->adding books. Make sure the option "Read metadata from file contents rather than file name" is enabled.

I checked and suggestion is enabled. Are there any other suggestions that might allow book covers to import when you add a book to calibre. It has always done this automatically and you could change it if needed in the metadata edit section. Thanks.

Which format are you adding?

Do the books that are being added actually contain a cover? If not it cannot be added automatically as part of adding the book to the Calibre library.

I am importing mostly .epub books. I have used Calibre literally for several years and have an extensive library of digital books. All of the books that I am now trying to import have covers. Books imported perfectly up until a few weeks ago. I installed an update to Calibre and ever since that point, the books import, but the covers do not. There has to be some setting that is different other than the one in preferences. I checked and that setting is correct. If I go to the edit metadata tab, I can choose a cover from the part where it shows current cover and then does a search for others. For some reason, Calibre is no longer finding the book cover as part of the adding books process. That is the part that I would like to fix. Thanks for any suggestions.

@kathyfromboston - immediately after adding an epub, and there's no cover, what happens when you do this?

Does the expected cover appear over on the right, where you see the big brown shiny book? If it doesn't then the book has nothing that calibre recognises as a cover. You'll have to open the book in the Book Editor to figure out why that is.

If it does - then why didn't Add Books find it

FWIW there is an option in Bulk Metadata Edit to extract covers from format files

I just uninstalled the program and reinstalled and everything is now working properly as it has for the last several years. I don't know what the issue was, but I am happy that the uninstall/reinstall solved it.

I have found that some Windows (W10) Updates that are waiting a reboot, can cause issues or just bog down my system.
I suspect W10 updated a OS Library that Calibre depends upon and it was not fully functional until later.
Glad you found the cure
