Charlotte Riddell, known also as Mrs J. H. Riddell (1832 – 1906), was a highly popular and influential Irish-born writer in the Victorian period. By making commerce the theme of many of her novels, she introduced a new element into English fiction, and was renowned as the novelist of The City of London.

She was also one of the best Victorian authors of the supernatural, and was well regarded by some of the genre’s severest critics, including M. R. James. Her stories are noted for true-to-life descriptions of people and places, and deal realistically with the financial struggles of the middle class. This realism, interwoven with the supernatural, makes her ghost stories the more effective.

The contents of this book were first published 1867 ~ 1899. Text is in the public domain worldwide, because the author died more than 100 years ago, and the works were published prior to 1923.
