Rocket Book and Kindle ex-user

Hi,

I used to own a Rocket Book way back in the day, and I fell in love with it immediately. I remember reading Angels and Demons on it before the author became popular with the Da Vinci Code movie/book media hype. My brother, who used to hate reading books, started reading them regularly once I bought him one too. Unfortunately, the company didn't last and neither did the device. I pretty much forgot about ebooks and ebook readers until Amazon came out with the Kindle.

Again, I fell in love with the device after I bought one and tried it out. My only gripe was the lack of backlight for night reading (easily fixed with one of those LED book lights attached to the cover). I must admit, Amazon's large selection, and being able to grab the next fiction book on the best seller list while I'm at the coffee shop without having to use a computer, is a major draw for me. Again, however, I had to give up on the Kindle as I left the States and moved overseas.

Now I find myself wanting a new ebook device, except I'm not sure which one to pick. I'm more concerned with the selection/format than the device itself. I really do like Amazon's ebook selection, and I like the idea of a device geared towards the casual reader rather than a professional/businessman.

So far, the Sony devices and the Iliad caught my attention, but I'm hesitant about the ebook selection they provide. Any suggestions or advice you have for a newbie about this stuff?

If you already had a kindle, and you can keep your US credit card... there is no reason for you to stop using the Kindle... you just can't use Whispernet anymore.

Unfortunately, I closed my bank account in the US before I left (I was an international student at one of the UCs), and gave my Kindle away to a good friend. The Cybook looks interesting, I had no idea it existed before reading about it in this forum.

Ok... but, now that you have the Kindle you can keep buying books. As long as you don't register a non-US credit card. You can use a Paypal credit card which Amazon will see as a US card.

Also, you can buy ebooks from places other than Amazon and remove the DRM and they work fine.

Or are you just wanting a new device and don't really like your Kindle?

Er, he did say above that he gave away his Kindle to a friend, and currently has no ebook reader.
