Hello from North Carolina, USA!

Hello everyone! I'm new to these parts. I found this site during a search for Sony Reader and Macintosh compatibility (gotta do my homework before I buy!).

I'm an avid reader of paper books, and I'm now looking at eBooks very seriously.

I hope to make many new avid reader friends here, and I'll talk with you in other threads!

Hi & welcome to MobileRead.

I own both a Kindle and a Sony 505. They're both very good. You can use the Calibre program on a Mac to manage a Sony, but you cannot buy any books from the Sony Store unless you use their Sony Connect software, which I have been told only runs on Windows machines. Since you're in the USA, a Kindle might be a good option for you. You can shop at the Amazon store directly from the Kindle, so there's no special software needed. I'm pretty sure that the USB connection to the Kindle is supported from any operating system, not just Windows, but I can't find any document explicitly stating that.

I'm a very big fan of reading on the electronic devices. I'm still trying to whittle down the huge stack of TBR paper books so I don't feel guilty when I buy a new eBook!

Hope you figure out which device to buy -- and be sure to check out all the books that have been uploaded here at MobileRead.

Yep. I connect my Kindle to my Mac and it shows up in Finder just like any external storage device. It will also work on a Linux machine.
