Post device for bad back

Hello Everyone,

I joined the forum today and this seems like the right place to ask the following question

I have a severe problem with my back. So I cant hold heavy books and I also
cant maintain my neck in a non neutral position for long. As I anyway get stressed working in front of my computer, I didnt want to stress my back/neck further and so I had given up on reading.

But I love to read and so I am considering multiple of options.

I could buy a levo book holder and continue to buy paper books. But I instead
thought of buying a ebook reader which is light.

I am thinking of buying a sony reader prs 700. I will get it shipped to India through some contacts I have or whenever I visit the US. But I noticed that it has no accessories, like a holder to help people with ergonomic problems.

A simple book light holder kind of thing which will work with ebook reader would be great. Something like a gorillapad for ebook readers.

Is there anyone here who has tried these things, either on a sony reader or iphone or itouch.

regards

Welcome to the forum, Venkatesh.

That is an interesting question.
If you do a web search for 'Book chair' there are a lot of light, foldable, holders. Would they meet your needs? I suppose that it depends on where you do most of your reading.

Welcome Venketesh

As for your Problem, i can thinks of a few ways in which you could get it to work.

One would be to get a local carpenter to modify a stand with a flexible arm (Perhaps a Microphone stand) and terminate the end with a clamp or holder onto which you could mount or clip your reader.

Another as you mentioned the Gorillapod, they've just comeup wit a upgrade which allows you to attach other items onto the shoe.

Its the Gorillapod Go Go and as you can see from the pictures is thas both a suctioncup as well as adhesive plates to mount on the shoe.

The main drawback is that you will still have to fit it onto a stand or chair to get it into a neutral viewing angle. You could combine the two to get the best of both, with the stand for stability in your chair, etc and the pod so you can move it elsewhere if you need to.

The 700 has no need for a book light holder as it has built-in LED front lighting.

Jon, I believe he's interested in something to hold the reader / book itself rather then a light for it so that he can sit in a neutral position.

Depending on how your back is, maybe a study pillow.

What sort of setup do you have now and how is it you prefer to lay in bed?

Yes, I am looking for a holder and not a book light. I will wait for Sony prs 700, and the light is built in.

I mostly read when I am on the bed. So when I am lying down on my side, its easy. I can prop up a ebook reader against a pillow. The problem is when I am on my back. And I cant hold it for too long. I need a device which can hold the ebook reader horizontal.
Gorillapod is a good start I guess.

I suggest to all the avid readers to please exercise your neck and back muscles regularly. I was a voracious reader also used to use laptops a lot. Now I cant do both for long hours

If you can sit at a table, you might consider a "plate stand". This post shows two that I bought for a pittance at a local hobby shop. There are some exquisite ones for sale at various online stores. I like using one of these to allow me to read at the table.

Agreed. I don't know why so many people sit at their desk all day and use a laptop as if they are on the train or something. They should at "least" get a keyboard and a laptop holder (http://www.relaxtheback.com/desktop-...FQcCswodr2zi6g) that holds the screen up at eye level so they can sit up strait. At "best" get a monitor too.
