Spam
With all the spam MR is having today, I think it;s time to add in a simple capcha to prevent this automated spam from being able to happen.

It's not automated. Captcha would do nothing.

@JSWolf. It's good your thinking about the problem but I don't agree. Captcha's are a pain in the neck and often don't solve the problem anyway. If it's a labour intensive process to deal with the spam perhaps it's feasible to appoint some more mods to help deal with it. Just about any solution but captcha's please.

There's already bot detection on signup. But this spam isn't bots.

I'd much rather deal with occasionally and briefly seeing spam - and yes I saw the flood today before it was dealt with - than deal with captcha. And there are no good captcha systems that are fully accessible.

There is no chance whatsoever of MobileRead having a captcha system for posts by members.

Because we can catch them registering, we can catch them browsing the general forum, and we can catch them creating the new threads. They are real, live people creating accounts and creating threads. I could easily easily create the 3-6 pages worth of spam threads they create overnight by copying and pasting. If it was an automated bot, we'd stand no chance at keeping up with them. No chance whatsoever. They'd never stop. They'd create them faster than we could possibly ban/delete them if it were automated.
Our security isn't that lax. An unattended script can't register and create the 100s of threads we're seeing. If it could, we'd already be out of business. Last edited by DiapDealer; 07-04-2018 at 10:22 AM. |

When I reported one poster they had 14 posts, and by the time I was done typing it had only risen to 16 posts by that poster so it has to be a human who was doing that. A bot would have flooded the forum in that same time.

Please no longer report the mass spam in General Discussions. It just takes our time up verifying that it's not a report of some other kind of spam. Thanks.

Really? I think there is more chance of a message announcing it to be lost. The moment you look for new messages, you really have to dig IN THE SPAM to find a valid message, so I think it's quickly found.

I was a bit irritated. I only reported it so that it wouldn't grow to multiple pages and then Paul decided to chastise me for it, and did it publicly. Isn't that what the PM option is for? To discuss such in private? I'm just saying.
