Calibre not tagging?
Hello, couldn't seem to find a thread that address my issue, so here's my post. I'm using Bookari as a reader. After tagging books in calibre most display fine on my device. However, some won't or don't display the updates, covers/tags (they remain as they originally were). When embedding the tags i receive no error in calibre, in other words the software acts as if it is working correctly. Any suggestions how to best to view embedded tags in calibre or elsewhere so i can see what they are and possibly manually edit them to correct this issue? (or getting calibre to work as intended).
ps - this seems to be happening with both epub and pdf. thanks tom Last edited by tomx2; 06-22-2018 at 12:02 AM. |

This has nothing to do with calibre, you just need to get bookari to re-read the metadata from the updated files. I'm not familiar with Bookari, so i cannot help you with that.

For ePubs you could try examining the dc:subject entries in the .opf file with the Sigil Editor (Tools->Metadata Edit) or BenChen's ePub Metadata Editor (it's in the ePUB forum).

Thanks for the help guys! As for Bookari, i thought the same thing so i removed all the book files and re-added the updated files thinking that it would force the reader to see them, but i'll dig deeper and see what's up with bookari (the best reader, in my opinion, out there). I'll try creating a new directory as well. And i'll give sigil a try to confirm that the changes were made and possibly make some corrections if needed. Again, thanks for your time and help! great suggestions, both. Tom

In working out this issue, i've tried a few things. Using BenChen's program, my workflow is as follows; i start from scratch and edit the metadata. It shows the correct cover art. I save and add file (in this case epub) to calibre. Calibre shows generic cover art. I edit metadata in calibre. It shows correct cover art. Copy files to device (manually) device (android galaxy note) shows generic cover art.
While the device is not reading/seeing the metadata (assuming it's there) neither is calibre after importing from BenChen's. And of course, after editing the metadata a second time in claibre it's still not applied or being read, even though in both programs it acts correctly and shows the correct cover art. Tried this with two different files, same result. Still working on it.... |

Editing the metadata in Calibre does not change the eBook file in any way. Since you are manually copying then you get the eBook file without any metadata changes applied.
To get the metadata into the actual eBook file either use Calibre itself to load the eBook files onto the device (which updates metadata during the transfer), or alternatively run the Embed Metadata option against the books (you may have to edit the toolbars in Preferences to get that option on a toolbar). |

Thanks, understood. I neglected to mention it but i am using "embed metadata" in calibre, with the results outlined earlier. That still doesn't explain to me why after using BenChan's i still am left with a generic cover, in calibre.
Also, i'm still a bit confused as to how to change the toolbars atop the program, and as such haven't been able to test loading files via calibre to my device (tried searching for how to edit toolbar in manual with no luck). Right clicking on toolbar does nothing, "preferences" does not allow dragging "sending books to devices" icon to toolbar and clicking on "sending books to devices" has no option to add to toolbar. I "think" I've clicked on every icon/setting i can find, but can see no way to add icons to toolbar. i'll keep searching... - Tom Last edited by tomx2; 06-22-2018 at 04:50 PM. |

I found it. Preferences icon > interface > toolbars & menus I'll give "send to device" a try and see if that will work with my metadata not embedding issue. -Tom Last edited by tomx2; 06-22-2018 at 08:58 PM. |

If the cover is not displayed when you import the EPUB file into calibre, then it is not properly defined in the EPUB file.
Your best bet is to not use the epub metadata editor. Instead import the original EPUB into calibre. Then add a cover to calibre, then use the Polish Books tool to *insert* or replace the new cover into the EPUB. That will work with all EPUB files, regardless of whether they define a cover correctly or not. Updating metadata will only update covers in EPUB files that previously had correctly defined covers. |

Another thought, any tips on how i might edit metadata in PDF's?
They don't update with the embed metadata button. And the only way i can find to get the metadata to update is by converting the PDF file to PDF. This works, however it alters the body of the PDF book in a negative way. Are there any recommended settings that will covert the book (PDF to PDF) leaving everything the same except the changes i make? Or better yet, a way to get calibre to embed the changes without a conversion? Thanks Tom PS - i'm using the default settings when making the PDF to PDF conversion. |

Embed metadata updates metadata in PDF files. It wont update covers, since PDF has no cover metadata

I noticed that it's not embedding my tags, are pdf tags supported? And if so, any suggestion as to why author (Hemingway) is added and tags are ignored? (non-fiction, etc)
Thanks Tom |

All metadata is supported in PDF. But PDF metadata is embedded in XMP form, you need a PDF metadata viewer that can read XMP metadata.
You can use calibre iself for that, Copythe file out of calibre, then re-add it and see if the metadata shows up. |
