eBooks use epub so why am I getting an acsm file?
Hi, busy soaking up all I can about calibre, wish I had done it years ago.

I do have a question:

I have several books on calibre and the basic functions seem pretty self explanatory, but... I bought a book on eBooks which downloads via an acsm file. According to wikipedia this is associated with DRM, so that would explain why I can't open the book with calibre. Yet the calibre Get function finds that this book is green DRM (whatever that means) rather than red, so doesn't that mean I should be able to download it?

I am confused because I clicked the button on eBooks which says 'download epub file, but what actually downloads is this acsm file.

Anyone know where I am fouling up?

The acsm file is basically a token for the book. You need to use Adobe Digital Edition (ADE) to open to acsm file, which in turn will download the actual ebook.

You will probably find instructions at the bookstore where you acquired the books as to how to install ADE. Do make sure to setup an ADE account.

Thanks Kovid,

I have read the manual at https://manual.calibre-ebook.com/faq...ith-acsm-files which seems to imply I need Windows, is that right? I have a Mac so am I not going to be able to get this acsm file into calibre then?

Why I was trying to convert that acsm file
Ok from reading around this forum I now understand that acsm files are DRM'd. I am finding calibre a fairly steep learning curve and while my medium term goal is to de-DRM my vast Kindle library, I thought I would

1 Download some obviously free stuff
2 Transfer across some non-DRM books from Kindle
3 Buy a book from eBooks and transfer it across

1 DONE - eg out of copyright plain text stuff like Great Expectations
2 DONE - I successfully brought a free edition of Aesops Fables across from Amazon to Calibre. It may be that I was just lucky - I picked this book because it seemed to be the right file type but this approach has not subsequently worked on other the Kindle books I have tried.
3 The book I tried to bring across from eBooks is green DRM according to calibre, so I thought I would be able to open it, but it is an acsm file so, if I am getting this right, necessarily DRM'd.

I suppose my next step will have to be attempting to de-DRM. Looks pretty complicated...

Before you download Adobe Digital Editions, you want to make sure you download version 2.0.1. The reason for that is because newer versions of ADE have the ability to use a different DRM and this newer DRM means that there are situations where you'd not be able to read eBooks with this new DRM other than on your computer using ADE.
