Just curious but when would I need to do this?

Most of the time, I need to take epub3 tags, etc. out of a book to make it a little 'cleaner' so I can reformat for easier reading on my Kindle

If you dont know when you need it, you dont need it

It's mostly for people that need it for some silly epubcheck related reason. Apart from epubcheck compatibility you can do pretty much anything in EPUB 2 that you can do in EPUB 3 since both are ultimately rendered by browser HTML engines anyway.

That's sort of what I expected. I was wondering if you planned to move the editor to epub3, although I don't know why you would need to.

THe editor is never going to be tied to any specific EPUB version. For that matter it is not even tied to EPUB at all, it edits AZW3 as well.
