Is anyone else following this thread:

Or perhaps there were just copyright issues about making changes to apps developed by others...

Oh, that depends case by case (and somehow also legislation by legislation). But patching yourself is not the only way: if software product A has, say, a menu whitened, you contact the producer; if 100 people note "ah, but A is not fully usable", you contact the producer more...

The "best news ever" to me, expressed above, meant the existence of the Onyx BBS. That was a Hallelujah.

Well, I'm considering Onyx for my next e-ink reader, that's why I'm monitoring this section, however ATM I have the Boyue T63 (don't, just don't).

Play Books experience on a 6" KitKat e-ink device is a mixed bag. Reading works just fine. However navigation is a PITA, the upper section of the screen shows like 3-3.5 book covers and indication of download progress isn't great.

Google Play Books works fine; it's not possible to disable the page-turn animation completely, but it doesn't get in the way too much.

Pocket works fine, but bear in mind you'll need to scroll down on the eink screen rather than turning pages (as you can with Pocket on a Kobo).

Dropbox works perfectly.

iA Writer works, but if you're a fast touch-typist and are used to looking at the screen while typing, you may find the lag disturbing. I have stopped using it for this reason. (If you don't look at the screen while typing, it may not matter to you.)

Kobo works fine, if you're happy to live with the limitations of the Kobo Android app (including only two font choices).

I haven't used the other apps mentioned.
