I often will read for hours. Can someone please recommend a comfortable chair

I'm 5' 3" What is comfortable for me probably won't work for you. I use a Laz-Y-Boy chair at this time, but much of their furniture isn't a good fit.

Hit the local furniture stores and do some sitting.

Definitely. I'd never buy a chair sight-unseen. It's such a personal thing, that you need to try them yourself.

I have a lovely leather motorised reclining armchair, which is very comfortable, and has nice wide arms I can rest heavy books on.

Are there well-known brands of chairs? Around these parts, most furniture retailers seem to make their own to order.

My present chair came from the local St. Vincent De Paul store. It's a recliner. Not too wide arms but then I read on my Kindle Paperwhite most often. I agree that a chair is a personal thing. What feels comfortable to me may be too hard or too soft to you.

Yep, it's kinda hard to recommend a chair not knowing what climate the OP lives in. That'll play a factor in determining the frame (wood vs metal) and the covering (fabric vs leather), and if the OP is vegan, we certainly can't be recommending a leather chair. So many factors

My usual recommendation for a comfortable chair is the Eames Lounge Chair -- the most comfortable I have ever been in a chair. To be honest, they are very expensive, but there are plenty of look-alike versions out there that I have found to be every bit as comfortable for a small fraction of the price.
