Kindle Oasis 2017 9th inverting problem

Hi, Dear!!

I bought a Kindle Oasis 2017 9th and by inverting the colors of the black background and white font the screen gets all scrambled, as if it does not update itself correctly.
I've already restored factory mode and nothing! I'm using firmware 5.9.4.
I noticed that the battery is running very fast too, is it?

someone with the same problem? Any solution?

Thanks a lot!
Filipe

What you are seeing there is severe ghosting. This is a normal artifact of using an eInk screen but the inverted screen makes it a lot more visible because so much of the screen is black.

On my Kobo when I am using Night Mode, I set the screen refresh to every page -- the flashing from that is preferable in my opinion. I don't have a Kindle handy but the page refresh should be settable from Settings/Reading Options if my memory serves me well.

The severity of the ghosting does seem to vary between devices or perhaps some people are just less affected by the ghosting.

You can try:
Settings -> Reading Options -> Page Refresh

but that causes a lot of flashing in inverted text mode and will make the battery run down even faster.

Your picture shows really horrible ghosting, way more than normal variation. I think that it is defective and should be returned for replacement.

A normal amazon 7" kindle oasis has little or no ghosting in inverted black and white mode.
I don't see how anyone would tolerate the level of ghosting in that picture.

That doesn't look right. Mine has none of that. I don't use the inverted but testing it, like I did when I first got it, I don't see any ghosting. At times if I stare really close and sideways, I can see a very slight darker area where the previous text was. But darker and it seems to disappear in a second as I stare at it. I can't see it from straight on at all. Its just black back round. I used the menus just to see and none leave anything behind.

Could it be that it is bogged down indexing right now so everything is super slow? Otherwise I think there is something wrong with your Oasis.

That may be true for other eink readers, but on the 7" Oasis the inverted mode is done in hardware. Black and white are simply switched. A black flash full refresh in normal mode becomes a white flash in inverted.

Even if refresh is turned off in settings, leaving the menu will always do a full refresh. So if there is ghosting leftover from the menu, then the screen is defective and should get replaced.

Doesn't really matter which way it is written as long as the screen is written 3 times. Normal writes white-black-white, inverted writes black-white-black. In either case, the screen is left in the background colour at the end of the cycle.

It kind of does matter for ghosting purposes. It shows up more in the background. If you create inverted mode by drawing the background and leaving the words empty, then over time the letters itself become muddled. On the Oasis in inverted after a refresh the background is black and the words are drawn as white.

See the difference? Paint something on the screen and you get very slight bleedover. Now if you erase it, you keep some of the bleedover as ghost. I personally rather have my ghost in the background and not have it looking like bad letters.

The problem with your statement is that the standard screen refresh does not write part of the screen. It writes the whole screen -- every pixel is written white/black/white or black/white/black. The Regal waveform refresh did partial screen refreshes but it requires matching the screen and device and takes a lot more memory keeping track of the pixel states. Used to be fun on my Kobo Aura watching the edges of characters writhing as the refresh occurred.

I was talking about ghosting, which only happens inbetween full complete refreshes. Say, everytime you turn a page and it doesn't flash. Normal is what happens most of the time - most of the time it doesn't flash. If you want to define normal as the occasional complete and full refresh, then we are going to have communication difficulties.

Perhaps. For me, when using an eInk screen, the occasional triple write to remove ghosting is part of the ereader's normal operation and expected. I do differentiate between refreshing the screen content (i.e. displaying a new text page or image) and refreshing the screen using the triple write.

As for the definition of normal? Usual, regular, natural seem to be commonly used. The triple write on an eInk screen is pretty much all of those.

Modern kindles go over 20 pages between page turns unless the chapters are short or there are a lot of illustrations, so a triple write page turn would not be "usual".

By the logic that seems to be popular in this area, if I don't fill my car's gas tank every time I start the engine, that makes filling it up not normal. Similarly, getting an oil change every 8000KM would not be normal. Yet both of those actions are normal/usual/expected when driving a vehicle with a gasoline engine.

So, yes, I do consider the triple write when I start a new chapter as normal, usual and expected since that was the choice I made in the settings.

Anyway, semantics. Back on topic: the 7" Oasis does inverted mode much better than any other eink reader faking it through css. Severe ghosting, even still showing the homepage, as in OPs picture is a hardware malfunction. Amazon CS should be contacted and the Oasis needs to be replaced.

So, in casual conversation, how do you make a succinct distinction between something that happens less than 5% of the time and something that happens over 95% of the time?

However often it does or doesn't happen, a full screen refresh is a normal and expected feature of the operation of any eInk device.
