Question about auto light on Oasis and others

So the new oasis has auto lighting as I understand. I think the voyage does as well.
My question is how it works? Can you adjust how much light it produces in relation to the ambient light level or does it just do its’ own thing? I ask because I wonder if the light level it chooses could be too dim or bright for some people particularly those with poorer sight, night blindness etc.

You don't have to use the Auto setting if you don't want. I've never used it on any tablet or e-reader I've had.

Even if you use the Auto setting, you can still adjust the light manually.

The light is "smart"; adjust it up or down from the setting it initially chooses and it'll learn your preferences. As has been said, you can turn the light sensor off if you wish and set the light level manually.

Both the Voyage and the Oasis have an option to automatically adjust the frontlight level based on ambient light brightness. To train it, leave it in auto brightness mode and adjust it brighter or dimmer whenever the automatically set level is not what you want. Eventually, maybe quickly, it will learn to set it correctly for you. If it doesn't, you may have to give up and always set the level yourself.

For me, the 2 problem areas are when ambient light is starting to get too dim to read by, in which case the automatic level is too dim, and when it is very dark, in which case it is too bright. That may be because I am not in those environments often enough for it to learn or it just can not match my preferences. It works well enough for me on my Voyage and Oasis 2 for me to leave it in auto mode except for those cases.

Because results are different for different people, you just have to try it yourself.

Have you tried the “nightlight” setting? It’s supposed to gradually decrease the light when it’s dark, theoretically as your eyes adapt. I don’t have my Oasis yet, so I’ve got no idea how well it works...

I have tried it on my Voyage and on my Oasis 2. I have never seen it dim at all, but I think a number of people have posted that it works for them and they like it.

My problem with it might be that I am almost always already somewhat dark adapted and lose patience and dim it myself.

The Oasis I see the light level change as I read and I find it annoying for it goes down to a darker setting so i end up turning it up.

...and my problem is that it takes my eyes a long time to "dark adapt" and the light goes too low.
