Images WAYYYYY too big - Kobo Aura Edition 2

With the old Kobo Touch essentially dead, I decided to splash out any remaining money I had left on the Aura Edition 2.

So far I am VERY unimpressed. With the old Touch, all images in every book I loaded onto it were fine, scaled the entire page and all looked the part. On the Aura? They are either way too small or too big!

I have no knowledge of CSS or Calibre, and to my knowledge image scaling for epubs have always been an awkward thing. I could also try load .mobi files onto the reader, but they are both massive and pages aren't defined meaning if I am halfway through the book, I'm losing that progress!

This issue was never a thing on my Kobo Touch and I'm really disappointed by the Aura. As much as I don't want to return this and give up on my eBook days which carried me throughout high school and college, I'm starting to consider this...

This book I got from pledging to Unbound projects which I do from time to time.
https://unbound.com/

The book format in this case is .epub.

It is really a problem with the ebook, not with the ereader. It might be a conversion problem, or if the ebook is originally ePub then it is just publisher incompetence.

In some cases you can fix the too-big images by adding this CSS to the book's stylesheet, or to the Extra CSS section of Calibre's conversion settings if you are converting from another format::
Code:
img { max-width:100%; max-height:100%; }
If the problem is just with the cover image then you can use Calibre's "Polish books" feature to replace the cover.

But in other cases you might need to dig around in the book's CSS or html to figure out what the publisher has done wrong before you can fix it.

There is a plugin for calibre and a standalone version that lets you scramble the contents of an epub without affecting the CSS or other styles. I would suggest using that on the epub and attaching it to a message here so we can take a look at the CSS/styles and possibly give you some suggestions as to how to fix the images in that epub.

I've also attached an epub file to this message. It's basic purpose was to show various fonts support for special characters but it also has a set of images in the last pages. All except the last one should display (the last one is in .tiff format which only one ereader I've tried would display.)

I think at the end of the day, the problem comes down to the image size being specified in px or pt, and Adobe RMSDK will not scale the images to fit the page if the specified size is too large. Maybe that is the "proper" way of handling such images, but it is sure a right pain in the posterior...

I often have this problem when converting from amazon KF8 books.

You could try adding KOReader, a long-press on an image in an epub will scale it to full screen. There are a number of tweaks, for image display, in the works at github that get worked on from time to time.

Edit: I just checked using a .cbz file I had made with large images and a long press on a picture that was displayed as half of the original image per page, crashed out of KOReader. I will look for an epub with large embedded images.

Luck;
Ken

Yet another reason for not using absolute measurements when specifying image or font sizes since they, by defnition, are not scaleable.

I've owned ebooks where the image and font sizes were specified in pixels. Looked okay on my original Kobo (the mark 1 with Bluetooth and a 600x800 screen) but when I re-read it on my KA1, everything was tiny and could not be resized. A quick edit of the CSS to change to relative measurements and while the images look a bit soft, I can now change the font size and the images don't need a magnifying glass.

Mobi format ebooks do require images to be specified in pixels. Yet another reason to prefer AZW3.
