Take 505 on London/Paris trip?

We are going to London and Paris for the first time next month. I want to take my 505 with me but my wife has nagging doubts about whether it is a good idea or not. Opinions?

It's a very good idea to take it with you. People are traveling all over the world with their eBook readers. What are her concerns?

If it's crime she's worried about, she needn't do so - potential thieves are unlikely to know what a Reader is, much less want to steal one! Just keep your wits about you and you'll be fine - in other words, behave as you would in any big city on Earth that isn't your home.

Besides, you needn't take it out of the hotel, surely? I mean, you're hardly going to start reading in the midst of all your sightseeing, are you? So it can stay in either your room safe or the hotel safe.

On the other hand, if she's worried that you'll take loads of books and ignore her, well...I can't help there, sorry!

Take the reader with you, you will want to read many times and there IT is, really at hand to be used!

Hell, the first moment is going to be when you are in your flight, or even before, waiting the airport to board.

Today I had to pass 4 hours in a public office in my country to deliver some papers (don’t ask!)… What I did? Simple I had my Cybook with me and, suddenly, it was no problem at all.

Have a wonderful trip to Europe and enjoy every minute of it.

Best regards,

I think she's concerned that the foreign travel increases the possibility of loss or damage.

Just try to make sure that it's reasonably protected from anything pushing on the screen when in your hand luggage - other than that, go for it!

It's no worse than traveling around town with it, (bank, doctor, the park, the beach, whatever). As long as you treat it with some respect as you would your laptop or PDA, there shouldn't be any problems.

I was thinking you actually need one for each of you!

Have to add my 2p in to say definately take the reader along.

Having my reader with me has saved me from backpain (from the 1/2 dozen books I used to carry with me) and bordom, not to mention my sanity when I was stuck at the airport for and additional 6 Hhrs.

Keeping it safe should be pretty simple. Keep it in the case, and just take care that nothing is in position to poke the front side.

I would take it - I've taken mine on the last two trips I've had to do to different states. It saved my sanity on an eight hour Greyhound trip.

One downside though - I keep having people ask me what it is, and a million questions because they've never seen one before. I like spreading the word and convincing people they need a Sony and all , but it can get annoying when all you want to do is read and they keep asking questions.

I have taken my Reader to Paris lots of times with no problems at all. Not even when wandering round very late at night. Also I've taken it to London fairly frequently.

I did, however, get some comments when I used my Asus EEE in a Parisian park (Le Jardin des Halles). Most public parks have free wifi, so I was catching up on my emails. People kept stopping and asking whether that small thing was a computer, and whether it could search the internet etc.

I have always found that in unfamiliar cities one should keep one's eyes open, trust one's intuitions when going about, and generally be polite and friendly to the inhabitants. Just exercise the same natural prudence that you would deploy in your home city.

I think you've convinced me. So now I'm wondering if there are free English/French dictionary ebooks and French phrasebooks available.

Definitely take it! The reader is great on travel. If your flight gets delayed, you've got plenty to do.

And, you might consider getting the MEdge Leisure cover. You place the 505 into a padded frame then zip the clear plastic cover shut. Great for beaches and boats. And, for carrying it in your hand luggage, you could place the reader into the padded frame, screen first for extra protection.

Regarding theft; your only concern there would be if either Particia were lurking around near you in London or Zelda Pinwheel were nearby in Paris.

BTW don't ever bring it around anywhere in Norther Virginia or I'll have my way with it. Us bookworms have sticky fingers from turning all those pages.

Of course you should take it on an overseas trip. The whole point of the Reader is to give you a portable library.

My Reader has now gone on holiday with me to Pattaya three times. It enjoys the long air trips. It enjoys folks staring. It enjoys the sun and the sand (in a ziplok bag). It didn't really enjoy being dropped on a tile floor and having its little plastic cover clip broken. But it cheered up when I repaired it with double sided tape. And it sulked badly whenever I left it in the hotel room so I could go on a night time trawl of the go-go bars.

Right now it is looking forward to going back to Pattaya at Christmas.

Before I had my Sony I would travel with a heavy stack of throw-away books to read. Then, once I'd read them, I'd have to scour the inadequate bookshops of Pattaya for more throw-away books. Now when I travel, my load is light and I always have plenty of good reading material with me.
