Space Venturer by Alan David, a pseudonym for British author Donald S. Rowland (ISFDB, SFE) is his vintage science fiction thriller with political and space adventure elements which is apparently a sequel to the previously-offered Despot in Space, this one finding the professor who invented a groundbreaking travel device which transported him to an alien planet returning home, and then back again, as mysterious deaths among the aliens compel him to solve an associated problem only to find further dangers along the way, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Venture imprint.
This was originally published in 1976 by Robert Hale as part of their Hale SF line, credited as by Donald S. Rowland. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) Description Professor Rez Condor thought he had satisfactorily concluded his dangerous business on the alien planet Crana when he finally brought the slave tribe of Nethers back to Earth. His immediate plans were marriage to his lovely assistant, Ethne Stound, and a long honeymoon. But despite his successful completion of the mission, Condor is still haunted by the chilling memories of the unforgettable journey. Transported by Celertron, a machine that looks set to revolutionise space travel, Condor has been subjected to the mercy of vortexes, domes and strange stimulation processes. Throughout this ordeal he has seen epic destruction and learned more about future than he is truly comfortable with. Just when the Professor thought he could put the last journey behind him, things immediately began to go drastically wrong. Two Nether children die in mysterious circumstances and he is compelled to return to Crana to solve the problem caused by the deaths. Condor attempted, against all odds, to solve his problems, but all is not as it seemed. A dramatic twist of events confounds his calculations, and the dangers multiply out of all proportion. Space Venturer is a thrilling sci fi space opera of epic weight and pace, as the lives of two ordinary people are gripped by a living nightmare. |
