How can I fix this "faded text"?

Here are two screenshots, my settings are unchanged between both. The first one happens specifically in this book, in all others it looks like the 2nd image. I tried changing the fonts in the reader preferences, and it did nothing to the Malazan book. The Malazan one was converted from AZW3 (says KF8 in the window name), but in either case the font is the same.

That looks like a page scan not actual text. Can you select the text and copy/paste it? And just to note, the fonts in the viewer will only apply if the book you are viewing does not specify its own fonts. If you want to remove the fonts from a conversion, use the Look & feel->Styling section of the conversion dialog.

It's text. Looks like it's a font specified within the book. I ended up just removing it to keep the title font, instead of removing all fonts on the conversion dialog (didn't realize either were possible). Thanks for the hint.

The odd thing is that the font in the book was times new roman, and I'm pretty sure my default display font is also times new roman... so there must have been something wrong with the ttf files.
