Free (Kindle) The Hell Raisers by Clinton Spurr [Troubled Past Ranch Dispute Western]
The Hell Raisers by Clinton Spurr, a pseudonym for British author Donald S. Rowland (ISFDB, SFE) is his vintage standalone western historical action adventure novel, this one the tale of a father and son trying to live a quiet life at a ranch, running into troubles as the man who was once accustomed to using their land as his own but now has no legal claim to it trying to intimidate and get rid of them by any means including framing them for horse hustling, and the father's own secret surprising past coming back to revisit in a way which does not help matters at all, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Pioneering imprint.
This was originally published in 1965 by Robert Hale. Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else Amazon sells worldwide, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive-or-else program) Description Years later and there’s still hell to pay… Jeff Allard owns the Circle A ranch in Pearson County, South Dakota with his father Tom. But there’s been trouble from the moment they settled there. The land was once unofficially ‘owned’ by Isaac Hanton, owner of the Bar H Ranch. Tom Allard may have bought the land legally but as far as Hanton sees it, the land is his and his alone. As a man accustomed to ‘frontier’ law, Hanton sees it his right to do anything within his power to get rid of the Allards. The only thing stopping him is the actual law; Sheriff Hazel, a good, hardened man who’ll not let Hanton get his way. Not that’ll stop Hanton taking pot shots at the Allards. And when three of his horses are stolen in the night and the tracks led onto the Allard’s land, it’s all the excuse Hanton needs. Of course, the Allards had nothing to do with it. But it is surprising that some horse hustlers have suddenly appeared in the county. To add to Jeff’s surprise, three men show up out of the blue talking to his father. They’re none other than Charlie Gowen, Bud Hannigan and Matt Sprunt – outlaws from one of the most fearsome gangs in the South: The Hell Raisers. And what’s more, it turns out his honest and wise father Tom Allard was once their gang leader. It seems they want their old leader and pard back for a ‘job’ in Pine Ridge; but Tom has given up that life for good. To him, all that matters in this world is Jeff. They may leave quietly enough but Tom knows that it won’t be the last they’ll see of them. And if, of course, they let slip that he’s still a wanted outlaw, then Tom’s done for. Especially if Hanton ever got wind of his past… Can father and son live in peace or will Tom’s past finally catch up with him? The Hell Raisers is a thrilling and classic Western. |
