Hello!
When you would like to see how a document looks like on a Kindle ereader, you can use Kindle Previewer program and it can determine whether the document is suitable for enhanced typesetting or not. As far as I know it is about hyphenation, kerning, ligatures etc.. AFAIK These characteristics are only available for azw3 and kfx. So let's say the program says your document is suitable for enhanced typesetting, but then it offers only to save the document to .mobi or .azk. WHY?! |

When the Previewer says Enhanced Typesetting is supported that means that the book will be made available to customers in KFX format if you publish it on Amazon. In order to determine this the Previewer actually converts the book to KFX internally, but for technical reasons it does not allow that format to be exported.
The MOBI file you can export from the Previewer is a Master MOBI which contains both the old MOBI format and the newer KF8 (azw3) format, both in the same file. Last edited by jhowell; 09-30-2017 at 11:29 AM. |

Any device that supports KF8 will use that part of the master mobi without any need to extract it.
Someone else will have to answer on whether a tool exists that can split out the KF8 part of the file as an azw3 file. |

I've seen a number of .mobi eBooks turn out to be dual-format eBooks because when they were made, they were converted from the ePub using Kindlegen. |

@ntamas: You can generate KFX files for testing purposes with the Calibre KFX Output plugin, if Kindle Previewer 3.x is installed on your machine.
