calibre-server 3.3 on Ubuntu
I was running Calibre Server on a headless Ubuntu box, but I haven't upgraded in a while. I just downloaded the new version, and my existing startup scripts in init.d no longer work. I quickly realized that the command line had changed, and updated the scripts accordingly, but calibre-server doesn't appear to start, although both service and systemctl seem to think it does - startup is logged, although no additional detail is logged anywhere. However, the process is not running.
Is there somewhere other than the system log where I can figure out what's happening during these failed startups? Or if you've gotten something similar working, would you be willing to share your config/scripts? I should also add that this works from the command-line (albeit as the wrong user account, since I can't log in with the normal service account), so I assume I'm not missing dependencies, etc. Thanks! |

Errors before the main loop is started are logged to stderr and after the main loop is started to whtaever you supplied as --log which also defaults to stderr. systemd logs stderr to its journal so look there. If you are using some other init system, you'll have to figure out where it keeps stderr or manually redirect stderr in your startup command.

Thanks!
After fighting with this for quite a while last night, I grabbed the service file from gbm and put it in place - fired up first time. I think I may have had dueling init systems, because I also deleted the file from init.d before creating the .service file. Either way, I'm back in business. Thanks, folks! |

Thanks, Kovid - should have done more homework on requirements up front vs. searching for the error messages.
