Calibre Comments field transfer to Kindle Paperwhite

Ages ago I raised this question as to whether the comments field in Calibre books could be sent with the book to a Kindle device. At the time the options were to make an alteration to Calibre preferences and then convert the book in Calibre before sending it to the Kindle.

Has any changes been made in Calibre so that it does not need a conversion to make sure the Comments went to the Kindle?

If the change to Preferences requesting that a book takes its cover/comments with it why can't any book copy the comments to the Kindle?

Could a plug-in do this?

The Kindle does not support comments metadata. And there is no Preference to make calibre send comments data. What there is, is a preference to insert the metadata as a "book jacket" page at the start of the book. And that requires conversion.

Thanks Kovid,
Ye, I was aware of the option to insert in a book jacket requiring conversion. That is the part I have trouble with. Why does it need conversion and could it not be handled by a plug-in?
I have a tremendous number of books in my Calibre library, consider it fabulous and promote it whenever I can. All my books in my library are (in majority) .mobi the balance pdfs. It means to get information to the "book jacket" page I have to convert mobi to mobi (I do not even attempt to convert pdfs for Kindle (hopeless). Then it ends up in Calibre with mobi and mobi1.

If you want the comments field without having to convert, then you'll want to get a Kobo. The Kobo firmware allows the comments field to be put in as part of the book's data.

The problem is that to add an extra page in a MOBI is not as simple as an epub. The file format means it has to be taken apart and put back together. And that is a done by a conversion.

@mitch13 - your profile has 'Appraising the market', so I assume you are considering Kindle but don't actually own one yet, I would think all current Kindle devices accept AZW3. The calibre Polish Book feature can inject a book jacket into an AZW3 file.

And, there are some useful Kindle related tips in this post from jhowell ==>> https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...98#post3551898

Thanks Better Red. Will follow that up. I have had various models of Kindle for years - currently on latest Paperwhite. Would not think of any other brand!
