Kepub for technical books not working properly on Kobo Aura one
I recently replaced my Kobo Aura One due to a green light issue. The replacement has the same issue too, but it's not as noticeable as the original. The replacement has it's own issues though. It was having a battery drain problem. After a factory reset*, it's ok now. But the main issue is that some kepub books are not working at all. When I try to open them, the device hangs up and restarts. This is mainly the case for technical kepubs(like drm free cisco press books). The kepub is 28 mb. I tried loading the epub version (77 mb) and that seems to work without any problems. My process for conversion is epub into calibre, epub to epub conversion with justify text, then hypenation and send it to kobo as kepub. This used to work without any problems with the old device. But on the replacement, it just hangs. Anyone has had this issue before? Any way to rectify this? Thought I'd give it a shot here before contacting Kobo as I don't think they'll have any idea. Any help is welcome.
![]() *Contacted Kobo about this. Heard that there is going to be a firmware update early July to fix this. Last edited by moorekom; 06-26-2017 at 10:51 PM. |

Hi,
Sorry I don't exactly have a solution for you. Are you using this extension for the conversion: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=220565 I have used this with my Kobo Aura One for some pretty annotation-heavy books, and they have caused no issues. Did Kobo say that they are releasing a new version to fix the battery drain issues? |

Kepub should not, in any way, reduce the file size. Is the epub you end up with after your conversion only 28MB? or is that just the resulting file size on the Kobo after you send?
Are you properly ejecting the device after sending the book before unplugging the cable? |

Regarding the firmware update, seems to be the case. I received an email from the which mentioned that the battery drain 'is a software issue which will be rectified when the new update is out in early July'. Last edited by moorekom; 06-27-2017 at 10:42 AM. |

This is what I do: Load epub into Calibre-> convert epub to epub with text justification -> hypenation plugin -> resulting epub -> send this epub to kobo using send to device. The resulting epub is only 28 mb. I agree that that is weird as I have the mobi file too and when I convert that to azw3, it has almost the same size. I've tried doing an elaborate mobi to mobi to azw3 to epub conversion. Same 28 mb for epub again. So I think it has something to do with calibre. Edit: Tried to convert the original epub to kepub without hypenating using the kepub output plugin. Same 28 mb. You're sure this isn't normal? Even if it isn't these files worked on the previous device. Last edited by moorekom; 06-27-2017 at 10:53 AM. |

Is it just the one book? If yes, get a fresh copy of the book.

That's odd because I have a Japanese epub which is about 21 mb. Although I could read it on my KA1, I couldn't select any words to look up in any dictionary.
So I converted it to a kepub and it lists it as being just 11 mb in size and everything works fine. (It was originally a kepub I bought frodm Kobo which I then stripped the drm from when I converted it to a epub. I used Calibre to convert it back to a kepub and sideloaded it onto my KA as I don't like syncing with the Kobo site or desktop app.) Not sure why the substantial difference in size, but so long as it works, I am happy. |

I just wanted to make sure that a 77MB epub wasn't being reduced to 28MB when sending to kobo... in this case, the epub is already reduced to 28MB in the epub to epub conversion stage. This will likely be caused by the "Output Profile" being used in Calibre, which reduced the resolution of any high resolution graphic. You'll probably want to change your output profile to "Tablet" to stop calibre from doing that. But it doesn't explain the problem being experienced.... I'm afraid I would need some samples to examine to offer more insight, if I can.

@moorekom: There was a problem reported earlier in the year with some kepub causing a reboot like you describe. I can't find the thread, but my memory says it was a problem with larger kepubs with lots of entries in the ToC. I was able to reproduce this by generating a catalogue using calibre and then converting to kepub. But, it wasn't consistent. One of my devices was OK, another failed. And another book that did it would fail the first time I opened it, but then worked after the reboot.
Are there any stack trace logs left after the reboot? These will be in the .kobo directory with the name "stack_nn.log" (the "nn" are numbers). Looking at these can help Kobo solve problems like these. And is there any chance of seeing an example book? If it is happening with something that is free to download, then we might be able to reproduce it and work out what is happening. Also, the Kobo Utilities plugin isn't involved in generating epubs. If you are creating them when sending books to the device, you are using the KoboTouchExtended driver. |

@Question Mark: I have had the same experience as you. Epub to kepub mostly downsizes it. Maybe because of the reason @rashkae has mentioned. And it was working on the old one without any issue.
@rashkae: Maybe you are right. I've never been bothered by the image quality as kepub offers the choice to double click on the image to zoom. But as you mentioned, the file reduction might be because of it and the issue here can not have been caused by it. @davidfor: I think you might have just hit it on the head. Being a textbook, it does have a lot of TOC. I believe book 1 had 50 pages in TOC. I'll try to check the trace logs. How do I open these log files you've mentioned? I'm adding the link to the actual book download site. I believe there is some device limit for the books but as far as I know, there doesn't seem to be any drm involved. If you want me to send you a copy of the book, let me know. Or we can also try some other torrent/pirate site to study this issue. But I'm not sure what your stance on the latter is, so let me know what you most comfortable with. Regarding the plugin, I believe you must be right. I remember setting everything up in the beginning, but after the initial setup I just don't remember which is which. ![]() http://www.ciscopress.com/store/ccna...-9780134441009 http://www.ciscopress.com/store/ccen...-9780134440972 |

@davidfor: Found the stack files as you mentioned. There are stack_00 through stack_09. I copied the 09 and pasting it here.

If he is resending the book to the Kobo, shouldn't he first delete the book on the Kobo before resending it?

![]() I did find the first book in the Kobo store and downloaded the preview. This has the full ToC of 566 entries. With that number of ToC entries, it might be a sickel reboot. When a kepub is first opened, it does a page count for all the chapters and adds this to the ToC entries in the database. If that isn't reporting updates, then sickel might see the process as hung and restart the device. That looks like an error in the WebKit. Which I would think is more likely to be a display issue. That goes against my thought of the page count. But, that might not be the right file. You need to look for one with a timestamp that matches the crash as the firmware cycles through them. |

@davidfor:
You are right about the zoom. I did what was mentioned here and the image size is much better now for the epub. Kepub version size has gone to 66 mb too but it still didn't work. Attaching the latest stack file. Let's see if we can find what the issue is. If we can't, I'll try factory reset and loading just those kepubs again and see how that goes. I've already backed up my collection to calibre. Quote:
