Al Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Seminary, has about 30,000 books in his personal library.

I've toured it twice, and would love to be able to spend time there. It is in the basement of the President's home, on the campus of the seminary. He reads a reported 1-2 books per day, and has incredible retention.

He has wide interests also, and reads a good deal of historical non-fiction.

Cool link even if the author of the article doesn't know the difference between a hoarder and a collector.
A hoarder is someone that keeps everything to the point of unhealthy. A collector takes care of their stuff.

My fiction and reading books don't fit her parameters. Not sure about the craft books. My cook booklets don't fit. But I know the cookbooks do. They take up a 5 foot wall and just over 10 feet on the other wall with 6 shelves left over for other things. 1457 is the count. Just my Texas cookbooks take up over 5 shelves. Most of those are fundraiser cookbooks or restaurant cookbooks.

I don't think 4-6 thousand books is all that much. At one point I had about that many science fiction and fantasy paperbacks and several thousand magazines. My ebook collection, admittedly with a large number of freebies is could be over 60 thousand if I included all of the public domain books I have. Book hoarding with ebooks is much less messy.

I once had a meeting at someone's house where the dining room was filled floor to ceiling with bookshelves filled with hardcovers, and I told her I had a question about her books, (actually about the bookshelves) and she replied "No I have not read them all." before I could even ask my question. I laughed because I knew from personal experience that was rather unlikely for her to have read even a majority of them, and then got into a discussion about the bookshelves.

I understand your friend completely.
The question I get frequently is "Do you cook?"
Now I will say, I probably won't ever make anything from the roadkill cookbooks, and I seriously doubt I will ever might the title recipe from Elephant Stew.
Some of the older ones, I don't touch very often. The rest, yes I do use them.
Favorite general cookbook is Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook.

Now you have all the answers to the FAQ.

Oops, I entered the previous post on my phone, and missed that the reply was the opposite of what she answered, which was that she had not read them all.

A point that few appreciate, is that at around the 5,000 mark, the library becomes either a research tool, or an expression of one's favorite genre.

At around the 25,000 mark, it is exclusively a research tool.

I once had too many books to count and finally realized that it was too difficult to take them with me when I moved as I did every few years.

I culled mercilessly and in the end gained about two extra average size rooms of about 15 feet by 15 to 20 feet that had been filled with book cases and storage bins.

Now my next task is to cull my tools, my electrical and engineering aids and though I have retired, I haven't quite figured out how to do that, but maybe before I die?

Probably 2 more rooms and a garage bay.

One of my sons was on his way to a job up in Charlotte, and needed a metric Allen wrench to adjust a power tool. Called on his way early one AM, and asked if I had one. Sure I said. Later I asked him to bring the "ring" with about 12 or 15 wrenches back to me. He said "but you aren't using it" I said true but it will be there if needed just like when you needed it, I had it to lend. He brought it back in a few days, and when he did I gave him 3 sets of Allen wrenches. Metric, SAE and a mixed specialty type (Torx, splined and the like) for him to have in case he had further need. He's a good lad, but he is still learning. [[You don't want to have to go find a tool when you are doing a job. It should be on hand and ready.]]

Oh I guess I should mention each of my cookbook shelves is roughly 2 feet long.
As to being the cookbook queen, I am sure there are others with more.
