Disable Offline Reading/Downloading books.

How do I disable the cloud reading from automatically downloading books? I inadvertently clicked on this feature and now don't see any option to turn it off.

I can't think of any place you could have clicked to turn it on.
Nor how any device can download anything when it is off-line (see title).

What device?
There have been a half dozen Kindles with keyboards and there are at least three 'Kindle Basics'.
Posting ONLY the first six characters of the serial number would be definitive.

What firmware version?
That information will be found on the same "Device Info" panel of the "Settings" where you find the serial number.

Did you make the Cloud Reader your Default device? You can change the default at Manage Your Content and Devices, in the Device tab. Select the device you want set as default by tapping the [...] to the left of the device, and then check Set as Default Device.

Nice answer, assuming that the O.P. got the thread prefix correct.

Thanks. I have spent a lot of time on the Amazon forums in the past. There was a time I knew all things Kindle. Even had a Pro badge, back in the day.

After posting my remark, I looked at your list of posts (with the dates).

I should have said: "Welcome Back"

No, the cloud reader is not my default device. However, when I find myself using a computer away from home sometimes I like to read my books using the Cloud Reader while at work (during breaks of course), at the library, etc. On my home computer I have the Kindle for PC which I use mostly to download books to transfer to Calibre. To read book mostly I've used the Cloud Reader since I can easily tab back and forth from the book and other web pages. However, since on the cloud reader I checked enable offline reading my concern is if access the cloud reader on a public computer the book will be downloaded there also therefore I would like to disable this feature.

Just make sure to log out of your Amazon account if you've accessed it using a public computer.

The Cloud Reader of course needs to be online to download books, however by enabling "offline reading" the book can be read afterwards with no internet access. I don't know what the serial number of the cloud reader is but I have the following picture which will show you what I'm talking about.

Of course, but my concern is if the book will be downloaded to the public computer and additionally how to disable the feature.

When you sign out of your account in the Cloud Reader, downloaded books are removed. Signing out of the account isn't the same as being "offline." The computer in a public place like a library is always "online."

I just used the Cloud Reader in Safari on my iPad. When I signed out of my account in the Cloud Reader, the downloaded book was removed.

I downloaded it again, and turned off the wifi on my iPad. The book remained in the Cloud Reader. That is offline reading. It's not "signed out Reading."

A book from Amazon can't remain downloaded to a public computer if the account is signed out. It would break the TOS with Amazon. It would also make it very easy to share books illegally.

Thanks for the answer. My other concern was that the 'offline reading" book would count towards the "license limit" of downloading the same book over several devices but apparently it doesn't.

I'm not sure why I never started posting...life I guess. I've read here a bunch, especially when trying to figure out Calibre.

It's hard to push in on a new group of people.

(spell check just tried to change "push in" to Pushkin.)
