Pondering an Oasis, Calibre/Collections question

So I haven't had a Kindle since the old keyboard models, and my last several e-readers have been Kobo's, but I love the look and size of the Oasis.

I have a lot of books in Calibre that are organized rather extensively into collections, I don't want to lose that, nor the books that I have. I can convert them to any format Calibre supports of course, but can they be transferred to the Oasis, with the collections usable on the device? I figure I'd have to jailbreak the Oasis, but could I keep using Calibre?

You can create the collections either on the Oasis manually, or at Amazon and then download the "collections" to your Oasis.
When you sideload your books, you'll have to place them into the collections manually, unless you jailbreak your device and add the kindle collections plugin to Calibre.

Thank you! So jailbreaking the Kindle will let me sideload my books with their assigned collections? That's good to know. As 2000 books would be a pain to re-sort.

Don't count on a jailbreak. If you get a device with firmware 5.8.8 or higher, there is no jailbreak at this time.
AFAIK, there is no one around to attempt a jailbreak at this time, so there is no time frame when one will become available.

Now that you can do collection management on the Manage Your Content and Devices page, it should be possible to create a script that synchronizes calibre and amazon collections, at least for Amazon content (there's no UI to do this with Docs).

To use the Calibre "Kindle collections" add-on, your Kindle must be jail broken.
And your Kindle must run an application to process the exported Calibre collections.
In the case of your device, LibrianSync (which requires a jb kindle).

And you must install the Jailbreak BEFORE your Kindle auto-updates to firmware version 5.8.8 or newer.

Ah, so if I don't currently have an Oasis, I am rather out of luck. Well that is a shame to hear, but very much appreciate all the answers.

No so.
Kindles are still shipping with 5.7.x or older firmware version(s).

Correct.

You probably have a better chance of getting 'old stock' if you buy from a retailer other than Amazon.
Just be sure the box is still sealed, do not accept if the box seal is broken (retailer may have updated it).

There is a system setting that prevents the Kindle from updating in the box (shipping mode).

this stinks I wish my kindle keyboard still worked I feel like it had more options than this oasis.

So if I have 5.9 (just shipped) there is nothing I can do?
