Redundant spaces in dialogues
Hi,
I have redundant spaces in dialogues after the dashes, see : ![]() It's totally random, it does not seem to follow a particular pattern. The problem appears on the whole book, so I can not edit this manually for each space. Is there a way to do it automatically? The problem also appears on my Kobo. However if I set the justification by default, the problem disappears (the book is not justified by default). In other words, I do not have this problem on an unjustified text. Thanks. Have you looked at the book in the editor? If there are extra spaces or other unexpected characters, you should be able to use search and replace, but you need to know what is there before you can fix it.
But, I doubt that there is a problem in the book. If extra space appears when full justification is on, but not when it is off, then it is probably created by the justification engine in the reader. If that screenshot is from your Kobo device, is it a kepub? If so, it isn't unexpected as the kepub render adds spaces around em-dashes when doing the justification. |

The screenshot comes from Calibre, so, I don't think the spaces are created by the readers since I have this problem on two different readers (Calibre and Kobo and I just Sumatra).
Concerning the file, it's an epub (in the screenshot). The problem is the same on the kepub converted from the epub. I did not examine the book : I am a novice, I don't know anything about it. |

There is nothing wrong. What I do if I see em dashes with spaces around them is remove the spaces. I prefer without the spaces.

If it's actually two "spaces" in the HTML, it can be addressed with a Search and Replace in editing.
Regex Search for \s\s+ Replace with a single space. |

Are you sure that everything is fine?
I just noticed one thing in Sigil, it looks like it's a layout problem or I do not know how to call it : When the text is condensed, spaces appear : http://i.imgur.com/C76Fll1.png But if the text is more spread out, they disappear : http://i.imgur.com/b6IypzV.png Moreover, I forgot to mention it, the publisher offers several versions : an epub edition in two large parts and a kobo edition (in epub, that I convert un kepub) in three smaller files. The issues appears only in the kobo version (the part 2/3), so I don't think it's intentional from the publisher. I wanted to get around the problem using the epub version but I can't convert it, the file is too big. Last edited by Strel; 06-03-2017 at 05:03 AM. |

Actually, I don't see any redundant space here :
http://i.imgur.com/gFzBlMC.png The three lines appear to be perfectly the same. But if I press left-align, the problem is solved but the text is not justified. http://i.imgur.com/HxH78d3.png I also have tried to manually remove the space with backspace : it works. http://i.imgur.com/U2PrBOA.png But I can't do that thousands of times for each space... So, is there a way to do it automatically? If not, so be it, and thanks for your help. |

Sure - use "search and replace" in Calibre's editor.

OK, thanks. I partially solved the problem : I can edit one htm file at a time, but not all of them. I can't select them all one by one with CTRL since there are more than 5,000 files. I would like to select them all at the same time, is there a way ?

You can set the scope of the search and replace operation to be across all files in the book.
