Set series info using calibre

Hi,

Can someone please advise on what I am doing wrong, I am trying to set the series info for my kepubs on the glo, I currently have it set up as follows:

Epub KoboTouch {title}{series}{series_index:0>2s| - | - }

Which is how I would like it displayed, however when I connect to Calibre then disconnect and then reconnect it is not sending the series info to the device.

I always sync the books from kobo itself, that way I can keep up to date on my various kobo devices.

I am not interested in setting up collections/shelves.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What you have there is a metadata plugboard to put the details into a metadata field in the book. These are used when sending a new book to the device. The books metadata is updated as it is transferred to the device and the device processes the book and reads the metadata from it to put into the database for use in the library. With one exception, calibre does not update metadata on the device when you connect. But, you can use my Kobo Utilities plugin to do this.

The one exception to the metadata update is for series info. You list having a "Kobo Wireless" but state "various kobo devices". The WiFi, does not display series info separately, and you need to use the plugboard for this. I don't know if you have one, but, the newer devices can display series info as a separate field in the library plus the recent firmware has this as a sort option. For these, calibre can update the series info each time the device is connected. This needs to be configured in the driver and metadata management on the "Sending books to device" page of the preferences set to automatic.

Davidfor,

I think I have isolated the problem the books on my Glo do not match the books in the calibre library. There used to be a function called match to library, but I am unable to find it.

I am assuming this is the problem, as the books that I cannot set the series info for are not showing up as being on the device when it is connected to the computer.

In calibre, with the device connected, go to device list. Find the book that doesn't match the library and right click on it. One of the options is something like "Match to book in library". Select that and a search dialog comes up. Find the book, select it and press OK. After you do them all, right-click on the device button and choose the option to save these changes. Sorry, I can't check what it actually says at the moment.

Davidfor,

Thank you for your help, I am currently matching as many books as possible with the device. For anyone else who is also wanting to do this, once you have matched the books you want, right click on device and update metadata, you then have to use the save to disc option to save your changes in calibre, or you will have to reinput them next time you use calibre.

That's the menu item I whose name I couldn't think of.

Exactly what are you doing and why? Once you have done the match and save, it should be still matched when you next connect. And any book sent, should match again. If you use "save to disc" to put the book on the device, it is more likely the match will need to be used later.

Also, one of the main reasons for books not automatically matching is multiple authors. The way calibre populates the metadata for multiple authors is not how the Kobo devices read them. Using the author sort or title sort in a metadata plugboard, can also reduce the likelihood of a match.

Davidfor,

I have 2 glo's, 2 aura's (original), 2 mini's and a glo HD. I am hoping that by using the save to disc option I will be able to have all of the devices showing the exact same information regarding series info.

I also have 2900+ books, of which currently about 1200 need matching to the library.

Also if I have to do a factory reset I do not want to have to go through this whole process again (yes I am backing my caliibre library up to 3 external hdd, just to be on the safe side.

I have also increased the internal memory on all devices apart from the aura's to 32gb.

Why would you use "save to disc" when what you want is "send to device"?

JSWolf,

I always sync my books from kobo and only use calibre to edit the metadata, set series info and amend the cover (if I can find a better resolution cover).

As I do not want to have to go through the match library function every time I have to do a factory reset (the last one was forced on me a few firmwares ago when it locked up both of my glo's). I am using save to disc so that I can keep the alterations if needed in the future.

Why do you need to use match library in the first place?

JSWolf,

Because when you use calibre to edit/download metadata, it does not always match the information on the books that I have synced from kobo.

Before you ask, the reason I sync the books and not use calibre to download them to the device, is so that I do not have to use the same device all the time.

I don't think that the save-to-disk will help. Based on what you have said, you are covering two conditions: sideloaded and downloaded.

For downloaded from Kobo, the only way to handle this is to update the metadata in the calibre library to match the book from Kobo. Each time you do a factory reset, or otherwise download books, calibre will attempt to match the books the first time it is seen. If it can't automatically match the book, you will need to do the manual match. You could update the metadata in calibre to more match what Kobo sends and hence the match will happen all the time. I don't like this option as I don't like the way series and subtitles can be in the titles from Kobo or most of the other shops.

Sideloaded books are roughly the same. But, in that case the main problem I have seen is with multiple authors. As I stated, the way calibre populates the author in the book isn't the way that Kobo expects it. Someone has done a metadata plugboard to fix this and a search here should find it.

If the purpose is to recover from a factory reset, then what you probably need it to backup the database on the device, the "metadata.calibre" and know what books are on the device. My Kobo Utilities plugin can automatically backup the database and some other files. Adding the "metadata.calibre" to this probably make sense. Then knowing what books to put back is the question. For this, I suggest the Reading List plugin. With this you can create a list that is automatically updated each time you connect the device. If you need to put all the books back, you can use this list. Personally, I don't do this. I do use a reading list for each device that automatically sends any book on it to the device when connected. When I get a new book, I add it to the lists for the device I want it on. I also take the rare factory reset as an opportunity to cleanup and remove finished books from the device.

If you are really worried, you can backup the complete user partition from the device and restore it later. I do this frequently if I need to test something with an older firmware version or want to be able to rollback after some other test.

I am always curious about the need for frequent factory resets. I can't think of the last time I was forced to do one. I don't think it was this year, and it definitely wasn't for my Glo HD which is the device I normally read on. The others have had factory resets done, but all of them were while testing something such as the behaviour of older firmware. If you are having problems, you might want to look at signing out of the Kobo account first. This will rebuild the database but won't remove any sideloaded files. The "metadata.calibre" will still be there to match the books on the device with the calibre library. And of course, the account repair function is there to trigger a redownload of all books from Kobo.

Davidfor,

I don't do frequent factory resets, with my 2 glo's (which I have had for about 4-4.5 years), I only did a factory reset because a synced firmware update locked both of them on the startup screen with 4 squares showing, and the light for the power button flashing. As I had left them both for 1-2 hours in this state, the only option I had was to use the power & light buttons to force a factory reset.

On my 2 aura's I was at one point doing fairly frequent factory resets, as they would boot up fairly quickly, but then freeze for up to 10 mins before working fine, however the latest firmware update with the new home screen has fixed that problem.

I only use calibre to add the series info because some of the books that I have bought from kobo, while showing as being part of a series on the website, do not actually show that information once synced to the device.
