Sony store outside US

Hi! I'm a new member of this community, having bought the Sony PRS-505 during my last trip in NY (strong euro+shiny ebook reader was a no-brain, at least for me ).
When I came back home (Italy) I was really surprised to discover that I couldn't register to the online store without a US/Canadian credit card. I'm sure that this question has been already asked many times, but I can't find it in the forum: is there a way to buy in the sony store with an european credit card?

And, being here, what's the best software (freeware or not) to convert files for the PRS-505? I've tried Calibre, but seems that I'm unable to make it work...
Thank you in advance!

Maybe you should describe some more the "unable to make it work" part since that's rather vague. You can also post in the Calibre forum with a more detailed description of the problem.

You can't buy books from the Sony eBook Store with a non-US credit card.

However, one of our members, "Leaping Gnome", is kind enough to offer to buy Sony eBook Store "gift vouchers" for non-US members, for which you pay him by PayPal. Send him a PM if you're interested. These gift vouchers CAN be used by people anywhere in the world.

With the imminent launch (tomorrow!) of the Sony Reader in the UK, and the opening of a new UK eBook store for it, it'll be interesting to see if it allows international purchasing.

Does anyone know if it will be possible to download from Waterstones ebooks and load them onto my US purchased Sony reader ps500. Are they the same format? Does one have to convert file type.

can't do it. Waterstones books are epub which uses Adobe Digital Edition DRM software - you can authorise your PC and read the books on your PC, but you can't get them onto your PRS500.

I tried this afternoon with a £0.80 book.

No change at the Sony Store yet...

It still only knows about USA or Canada when you try & register a credit-card!

I queried that & got the following back from Sony support:

The UK store is a different entity. Please contact support at www.sonyeurope.com for supported sites. Our store is only available to U.S. and Canadian customers.
Certainly the UK Sony Site only mentions/links to Waterstones...

I have some for sale. They are $28 for a $25 card. That covers my paypal fees and the time and energy spent to get the cards and email the codes.

Has anyone in the UK tried this before?

i.e. using a Sony Gift card purchased from one of the folks on here for their UK-based PRS-505?

And if so did it all work ok? I'm still new to this ebook world and slowly getting my head round what formats/stores will work with my UK PRS-505.

Thanks all

Keith

It will work, but you need to install the US version of the Sony eBook Library software, which connects to the Sony eBook Store. The UK-supplied version of the software connects to Waterstones.

Frankly there's very little point. You're better off just buying Microsoft Reader (LIT) books from somewhere like BooksOnBoard or Fictionwise and converting them to Sony format, something which is extremely easy to do.

I just tried to install the US Sony Store software and I can see what you mean - it sees I already have the UK version installed so it won't proceed.

I've got no problem using alternative sites (already used fictionwise with no probs) but the prices on the Sony US site are so much better on certain releases.

For example the recent Booker prize winner, 'White Tiger' by Aravind Adiga is $12.59 on the US store. The UK store doesn't even have it and its $17.99 on fictionwise.
