I read somewhere the problem is caused by static and the damage is permanent.

I never put my Reader directly on the belt or in the box. It always remains in my bag so no static can damage it.

Never realized that could happen. Luckily, it seems to happen very infrequently.

Quote:
“I don’t think the radiation used in an airport scanner would ever be strong enough to damage an electronic ink display,” said Professor Daping Chu, Chairman of the University of Cambridge centre for Advanced Photonics.

"But you can get a build up of static inside these machines, caused by the rubber belt rubbing. If that charge were to pass through a Kindle, it’s conceivable that it could damage the screen.”

Electronic ink screens use thousands of tiny capsules filled with magnetic black and white particles to display text and pictures.

It is controlled by applying a small voltage across the capsules, which sends either the positively charge white particles or the negatively charged black particles to the front. They stay in place until the next time a voltage is applied, which allows the Kindle battery to last for much longer than in gadgets that use LCD screens, such as the iPad.

“A static charge from an airport scanner could be 100 volts or more,” said Professor Chu. “That could permanently stick the particles to the screen.”

Just another security step the airports are taking as part of the restrictions placed on electronics you can carry on.

So don't put your Reader on the best or in the tray exposed. Keep it in your bag. I do. I don't expose any electronics unless I have to. And I don't have to with my Reader.

It should be fine left in your bag where the static cannot get to it.

My first gen Kobo Aura has been through an airport X-ray probably two-dozen times over the past couple of years with no problem. It's always stashed in my backpack.

I've also never had a problem with any of my ereaders over the numerous trips through airports over last 7 or so years that I have been using such devices.

However, it is good to know that the risk for damage is there. I will certainly make sure that my Max is well protected should I decide to take it traveling.

Would the e-reader be ok if it is in a cover when put on the belt/box or would that not be enough to protect it?

I would not risk it. My Reader has always been in a cover and in a bag. I won't take chances.

I've had to pass about a dozen scanners during our holiday, and I always took out my reader to put in a tray together with my other tablets...

I've never had to take my Reader out of my bag. And this includes my two recent vacations.
