ePub creation-help needed

Hello,

I am trying to publish a recipe book. So I created epub from an MS Word document. The tool used for this is Calibre.

I can read the epubcreated, well in Calbre but the images/recipe headings are not aligned properly in some other readers like Sigil and Ice cream epub reader. Please tell me how to rectify this.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Ashok

You either need to use styles correctly in Word (depending how the conversion in Calibre is done) or correct the stylesheet in the ePUB.

My advice would be to start fresh with Sigil, a free and excellent software for building epubs.

Personally, I have no patience for Word. I simply run the Word doc through word2cleanhtml dot com online, open that CLEAN html in Sigil, add my own style sheet, split it into chapters and sections, and build a book that really works. Takes time, but all good things take time. Automagical fixes are usually pretty awful. (You can of course tame Word, but I would rather devote the time to actually formatting the book as I want it to look.)

I resent that a bit Notjohn. It is how you apply the fixes and knowing the limitations of the fixes/methods. I have various routines build in my add-in that cannot be done in Sigil.
Formatting an ePUB is not done best in Word, but if you use Word for processing the actual text and correcting the text, it is absolutely good.

You are testing all wrong! Sigil doesn't count so don't test the final book with Sigil. Hardly anyone uses Ice Creak ePub Reader so forget it even exists. When you are using Windows and ePub, you test with ADE 2.0.1. Most computers will be using ADE and most eInk Readers that handle ePub use some version RMDSK (ADE). It has to work with ADE. If it does, then it's up to the others to follow suit.

As we know Jon is very partial to ADE. His point is mostly valid - I would tailor it slightly. Test the epub on the device that is predominant in your intended sales avenue. If you intend to sell primarily on apple, then test it in iBooks. If you sell on Amazon, test on a kindle, etc.

As far as i know about ePUB that one of the disadvantages is that you cannot read it on Amazon Kindle devices. But you can definitely edit book with Calibre after your e book has been converted. Also, you can edit ePub docs with Sigil

Actually, if you plan to sell on Apple and elsewhere, you may want to make two versions. One for iBooks and one for the rest. A good ePub can also be converted for sale at Amazon. Most eBooks Amazon sells started life as ePub.

Yes, and Kindle books cannot be read on ePUB readers. What is your point?

That's my approach. Since Hitch tipped me that fact in 2012, I've only ever uploaded epubs to the KDP. Only one (of fifteen or twenty) failed to convert at the first go (I don't remember the flaw, but it was easily remedied).

The KDP version has no cover, and that goes also to Google Play. I add a cover for Draft2Digital, which goes to all other stores.
