Free (Kindle) Duel in the Dark by Marguerite Steen [Vintage Literary Drama w/Romance]
Duel in the Dark by the late British author Marguerite Steen (Wikipedia), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature whose works enjoyed a period of popularity in the 1930s and 1940s, is her vintage standalone literary drama novel with f/m romantic elements with a cross-generational family competition, centred around two strong-willed theatre women: a grandmother who has succumbed to ill health, leaving her in the care of her ambitious granddaughter, with whom she experiences a divide when a handsome scriptwriter begins paying more attention to the once-famous actress than her love-smitten grandchild, who begins hatching plans to turn the tables, as you do, free for a limited time courtesy of publisher Endeavour Press' Odyssey imprint.
This was originally published in 1928 by Geoffrey Bles. This is erroneously filed as an “historical romance” (it was contemporary at the time it was written, and has simply aged by nearly 90 years) and “inspirational” as well as under plain old “literary”, so YMMV about whether or not there's an HEA in this (from the blurb, it doesn't really sound like it, but I could be wrong ![]() Currently free @ Amazon (available to Canadians & in the UK and pretty much everywhere else worldwide that Amazon sells, since this is being done via their KDP Select exclusive or else program) Description The roaring twenties… When it comes to the theatre, Lisa Huleatt is a force to be reckoned with: proud, talented, impulsive... and she gets it all from her grandmother, Alice. Alice was a famous actress, once upon a time, but now that her heart’s too weak, it’s Lisa who must take care of her. Lisa and Alice orbit each other like bright, twin stars. But when Valentine Taureaux arrives he will set the two of them on a collision course and Lisa will transform from doting granddaughter to jealous child. Lisa is determined to win Valentine over, at any cost, and she thinks she’s found a way. If she can get Valentine’s script seen by a famous producer like Maurice Humbert, Lisa’s knows she’ll get her man. But no matter how hard she tries, her plan is going nowhere and Valentine can’t seem to take his eyes off Alice. Until Maurice asks Lisa a question that changes everything... Duel in the Dark is a tale of love and vanity that walks a tightrope between comedy and tragedy. |
