Ragged Right Alignment: You can now read using left-aligned (ragged right) text instead of justified (aligned on both left and right margin). This new alignment option can be selected from the Display Settings (Aa) menu within Kindle books that support Enhanced Typesetting. On the Kindle eBook Store page, look for "Enhanced Typesetting: Enabled" in the features list.

Faster Highlighting:
You can now touch and drag to make a highlight more quickly. Tap the highlight again to edit or delete it.

Advanced manga page turn controls: You can now drag left and right to adjust speed and direction when using the fast continuous page turn feature while reading manga.

Preview manga double page spreads: You’ll now see a preview of double page spreads at the bottom of the page while reading manga. Tap the preview to see a full landscape view of the spread, and tap again to close it.

Crop margins in manga: You can now remove blank margins from manga pages for a closer view of the content. Enable this option from the Display Settings (Aa) menu within manga books.

New manga features are limited to manga in KFX format - only newest releases in Amazon Store.

It may just be me, but the book I was reading reset to the beginning when I opened it after installing this update. Syncing did not restore my last reading position. This is a book that was delivered normally OTA by Amazon.

My normal local book saved its position. I dont have sync activated. And Jailbreak still works after this update. (PW 3, Prev FW 5.8.7)

No issue for me after updating my Voyage. Side-loaded book was at the same reading position I left off at before the update.

Wonder if this will fix the random issue I get where sometimes I turn to a page and it's blank mid-way down the page, then I go to the next page, turn back and see that the text fills the entire screen.

It seems silly to me to limit alignment choices to books purchased from the Kindle store with "Enhanced Typesetting". I'm not a programmer, but it seems like this would be a feature that could easily be applied to all books including sideloaded books. Both of my Kobos have been able to do this for years.

I am (or was).

It is full justification that is difficult to get correct.
Ragged right (unjustified) is relatively easy as such things go.
It is a sub-set of the full justification processing.

There must be a reason (or reasons) other than technical.

Easy is relative. The kindle has separate e-book rendering software for the MOBI, KF8 and KFX formats. At this point KFX is (I assume) the majority format for e-book delivery by Amazon. It is under active development so the programmers are currently familiar with that software. So adding new features to KFX is easiest and gives the best return for the cost of development.

The rendering software for the other formats hasn't been touched in years. It would be more costly in development resources to make the change also apply to those formats with less to be gained. It is likely that they want to use their resources on developing even more KFX features instead.

jhowell: "Easy is relative."

That's not my experience. I learned years ago that nothing is difficult for the person who doesn't have to do it and nothing is too expensive for the person who doesn't have to pay for it.

Manga have different reading features and conventions than comic books. None of these new features apply to comic books.

Mostly the difference in features is that the print versions are generally different sizes: manga are smaller, more the size of a Kindle itself and the digital images themselves are smaller in size, and can be 'flipped' quickly, whereas comic books are larger and need to have 'panel view' to be readable on a Kindle. And page order of manga is 'back' to 'front'.

And yes, just because it is in 'manga' category does not mean it uses the 'manga' format that enables these features. But unfortunately you cannot tell if they do or not without at least downloading a sample. The listings do not include this information as far as I can tell.

Anyone else notice that highlighting takes just as long?

How come the "faster highlighting" doesn't seem much faster on my Kindle Paperwhite?

Old process: 1) drag your finger along the words that you want to highlight 2) tap "highlight" in the pop-up menu 3) pop-up menu goes away and you can continue reading

New process: 1) drag your finger along the words that you want to highlight and Kindle automatically highlights it and brings up the pop-up menu 2) Now you still need to click outside of the pop-up menu to dismiss it so you can continue reading.

Am I missing something here?

Yes.
The difference between self-serving, marketing statements and technical change descriptions.

KT2 here. I have manually updated to 5.8.9 cause it won't detect it via internet for some reason. Seems fine and then it restarted but then now it's stuck on the Tree of Life screen. Have tried to reset, it blinked but remained on said Tree. Am wondering if anyone with KT2 have this issue?

EDIT: It also won't connect to the PC.
