New PRS-505 & a request

Hi, I just purchased my new PRS-505 today, in Silver. LOVE it so far! The design is so compact & sleek, and I've already downloaded a couple of books.

I was also removing the default content and accidentally deleted the 1 item I wanted to keep: the picture "lampposts". I didnt get a delete confirmation first, or find a way to recover it. I wrote to Sony to see if they could send me the file and they said that once the content is deleted you can't get it back. If anyone still has this file on their Reader is there any way possible to upload it or email it to me?

Thanks for any help.

Welcome to MobileRead, nyc!

To amplify on what igorsk already said, the default images, texts and such should be somewhere on the CD that came with your shiny new 505.

I hope you get much enjoyment and use out of it.

...and dead pixels?

Thanks everyone for your welcome's and help. I will take a look on my CD to find the picture. I'm very surprised Sony tech support didn't let me know that.

Another question...after starting to read my first book I noticed a black dot under the book title in the upper right area. I realized this must be a dead pixel because when I'm at the main menu the dot is white in that black upper strip. After I looked closely there is another one in the lower left quadrant in the text area. I can even see them when the Reader is turned off. I'm kind of hesitant to go back SonyStyle about this...especially if I get another one with more dead pixels than 2 and/or worse locations. Just wondering is this is typical for the Readers and a lot of people have them or did I get a dud?

Thanks again everyone.

They're not unheard of, but their not "common" either. I would take it back as quick as you can -- they have a pretty narrow in-store return policy ... something like 14 days I think. You can probably get them to open the replacement and check it, they usually come with a fair amount of charge in the battery, so that's not a problem.

Be sure and un-register the current one from your Sony account before returning it if you have it registered!

Thanks NatCh! I'm going to go back to the store this afternoon then and see what they will do. I tried to de-authorize it under device management but the only option it gives me for it is "Rename". How do I de-authorize it? Do I have to call Customer Service?

Make sure to connect the Reader you want to deauthorize to the computer, and that it shows up in the left panel of the eBook software, before clicking the "manage devices" button.

If you forget, just call Sony customer service and they can take it off your account as well.

Cheers,
Bob

What BobVA said, plus you have to log into the Sony ebookstore to do all that.

nyc, if you are in NYC, don't forget that you can borrow tons of ebooks from the NY Public Library after you get a library card. (It's free to residents.) See the Wiki or the sticky in the content forum.

Thanks for everyone's advice. I was able to de-authorize the device by calling Sony. They said that you have to call to de-authorize in they set it up that way on purpose. I also told them about the pixels and they too said the screen was defective and I should exchange it.

I went to SonyStyle, showed them the screen and they happily exchanged the Reader. This one is great, I don't see any pixel problems. Plus now I have the lampposts picture back again so I'm a happy camper. Thanks again for all your responses, this is a great forum!

ps. I didnt know that about the library will definitely check it out. Thanks for the tip!

There's a sticky thread about checking books from the library in this forum (it's the 1st thread). It answers a lot of questions. I have 3 library cards that I'm enjoying (NY State, Brooklyn, and Miami)!
