Kindle Paperwhite (7.Gen) showing brackets when translating
Hi folks!
I'm new here. I am the proud owner of a Kindle Paperwhite (7. Generation) and I have a problem: Whenever I want to translate a single word from English to German (by lon pressing it), the brackets for selecting multiple word always show up as well. This was not the case until a few days ago - maybe it has something to do with an update. Back then, the brackets only showed up if I selected multiple words, but now it happens when selecting a single word as well. The problem is that if I translate a single word and press on the background to exit the translation mode, the brackets often (not always!) stay so I have to press on the background in twice in order to enter the reading mode again. This can be pretty annoying, especially since this was not the case until now. I have made screenshots of what it looks like: http://abload.de/image.php?img=img_2...65232eaznc.jpg (when long pressing a single word) http://abload.de/image.php?img=img_2...70105lzxbg.jpg (after pressing on the background once) I just want to ask you if this occurs on your Paperwhites as well and if you found a solution. Thank you in advance! |

The appearance of the brackets is 'normal', at least in current version of firmware. I think that's been the behavior for some time (but my Paperwhite 1 does not do this).
As for the lingering highlight, I had it happen twice on my Kindle Voyage in about 40 attempts. I tried also on my Kindle 8gen and also see it here and there. So yes, it happens, though I would not say it is frequent enough to annoy me. If it was happening before the latest update, I might not have noticed (I don't do a lot of lookups). But it sounds like it is more frequent on your Paperwhite. Maybe a Restart will make it go away? Last edited by tomsem; 03-31-2017 at 08:32 PM. |

I couldn't reproduce the lingering highlight thing, but I only tried 2 or 3 times. Shari |

it looks like the brackets are designed to be "pull handles". IE Big enough to grab (the lower bits) so that you can drag it wider, to highlight more than you started with. This would make sense for note taking, or highlighting (as opposed to looking up the word). And maybe that's why the highlight stays put with only one touch (to remove the dictionary). If you wanted to move the brackets, for an actual highlight, you could do it after the dictionary goes away.
But I've been crocheting for a month, and not reading -- so I haven't looked at my Voyage to see if it has this new update. So I'm just guessing. |

The 5.8.x firmware versions are much different than the 5.6.y versions. The PW-1 and KT are built around older processor hardware than the newer models. Amazon/Lab126 is no longer building new firmware for the older hardware. |

Yeah, but if the brackes went away, one would have no chance to stretch them wider. I mean ... you initlally touch a word, and then you need time to grab the handles to stretch them. (Or am I thinking to Mac-ly?)

The point is that after dismissing the toolbar/info boxes, sometimes the highlight+brackets remains. See the images on the original post. |
