Annoying - finally learn book is part 1

I just read 313 pages of a book only to discover that I had just completed part 1; thus, no resolution to the plot.

It's VERY annoying to read a "book" and then learn it's only part 1.

Is there someone way to learn this undisclosed fact before downloading or reading a book?

If there are reviews on Goodreads, usually people will say if a book is part of a series, and if it is, whether or not it can be read as a stand-alone or if it ends on a cliffhanger. Of course this doesn't help if you are reading a brand new book and can't find any reviews.

I think book descriptions ought to state that a book is #1 (or #5 or whatever) in a series, but unfortunately they don't always have this information.

I don't knowingly buy "books" that are incomplete -- parts, episodes, whatever they're called. I've still managed to buy two over the years, and I'll never buy anything else from those authors again.

I ask around. Between reviews, Goodreads, and/or the author's website ... somebody can usually give me the skinny. And if I can't find out for sure beforehand, then I usually don't start reading. And many times, even if I DO find out beforehand, I won't start reading it (when the answer isn't the one I want, obviously).

Finally, I found it here...where I never visit. How I found it is amazing!

In any case, it looks like there are no easy answers to determining if a book is incomplete.

Different strokes.

I grew up reading Analog Serials. I did not wait for all sections to be published. I read them as they came out.

But I do agree, if a book IS a serial (meaning, the story does not stand alone), then it should be indicated.

OTOH, I would not exclude a single book out of a Series from a current reading list just because the WHOLE series has not been published (or purchased)

I totally hear you on how annoying the whole part of a book thing can be. I've been burned a couple of times on things that turned out to be serials and weren't advertised as such. Thankfully as authors/publishers that do this (not advertising the fact it's a serial, part, whatever ahead of time) usually get blasted in reviews more and more are starting to be very careful about being sure that people know before they buy what they're getting.

For me, I won't read any books in a series if the whole series has not been published. I even stop reading the Harry Potter series in the middle of Book 4 when I knew that a new one was published. I know it is not a really Book 8 as it is a totally different story, but no one guarantee that J.K. Rowling won't publish a real book 8. Maybe somehow she can add something that is about Harry etc.
