Failed Upgrade - Recover from Recovery Partition?

Hi,

After syncing an Aura HD (N204B) it performed an upgrade which failed.

Now, when powering on the screen flashes black, then white and stays blank.

I've tried the various recovery suggestions, including 4 resets in succession, and powering on and then tapping the screen to no avail.

I've accessed the SD card and checked there are no corruptions (fsck) - but no joy. Interestingly, posts say the second partition is a recovery partition. Does anyone know if dd'ing the recovery partition to the primary partition works as a recovery mechanism?

Failing that, I'd really appreciate a factory image to restore from if that was possible.

Thanks heaps.

Just dd'ing the recovery partition to the root partition won't work. The recovery works by formatting the root partition, unpacking file to the root partition and then dd'ing the uboot and kernel to the appropriate places in the disk. There's a fair chance that rewriting the uboot and kernel will be enough to get it to the state where it will do the factory reset by tapping the corners.

Or, you could just restore an image. I have sent you a PM with the link to the image. If you want to restore the serial number, it is at offset 0x200.

I had this exact same problem. Screen tapping? That works on the H2O, but you said you had the HD correct?

The hard reset on the Aura HD (and what fixed it for me) was to hold the red power button for 10 seconds to ensure it's off. And then while holding the light button down, push the red power slider back and forth repeatedly. It will start rapid blinking and hard reset itself.

I didn't notice that. Yes, for the two button devices, the manual factory reset is to hold the second button down while turning it on.

Thanks heaps for the link, davidfor.

I actually had some success with the dd. After doing it, it kicked into the restore process (I must have corrupted something enough for the Kobo to realise it needed a restore).

However the restore process got into a reboot loop. After hard powering it on and off a couple of times I got to the setup via computer screen. Hooked up into the Kobo desktop application, synced OK, then when I disconnected the upgrade started and then it bricked during the upgrade again. The screen goes really light, then then after a hard reset it is just blank.

AkiraReader's reset tip ( thanks! AkiraReader ) initiated the restore a lot easier thats for sure, and the restore worked first time. After setup via desktop it got halfway through upgrade and the screen went really light again - this time I did a quick power-on (instead of holding down for 10 seconds) and the upgrade woke up and continued. I reckon I tried this before but maybe not. Battery is at 76%, so that should not be an issue, and it was plugged into power.

Anyway, the Kobo has just finished syncing all the books, its been an interesting journey, and I have a happy wife, so thank you so much for your help gentlemen.
