Want to test file formats on "xyz" device? Links to free files

[WORK IN PROGRESS]
[EDIT 170225 - will be moved to the wiki TestFiles https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/TestFiles page]

This thread was started to satisfy a wish to compare the reading experience on different devices pre-purchase.

The aim is to list a couple of examples for each desired format that are freely available online and exemplify common practice or special variations on the format.

In cases where the end format began life as another type--e.g., after PDF to epub conversion--I made a subcategory.

Obviously, people will need a file/format types not yet here. Provide copy/pasteable content for now, and I'll add to this post as I can.

I wish this were a wiki so anyone could edit and improve. In lieu of that, I'll do what I can and encourage migration of this post to a more suitable home. (I hope there is a home at MobileRead, since it is such a good source of information.)

Good idea, but I failed the test. ;-) I went to the wiki, to the Community Portal, found the page I wanted to link to (Category:Formats https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/Category:Formats). When I opened the page in "Edit" mode, I found that the neat list of categories at the bottom was not to be found. I could not figure out how to add an item like "Example formats for device eval" into that list.

I decided not to make a page since I could not see how to link it to the best spot I found, in fact, the only appropriate spot I could see.

You are doing it back-to-front. The pages list on the pages are generated from pages that claim to be in those categories. What you need to do it create a page and include the categories it belongs to on the page. Have a look at an existing page for an example, or there is a help link when you are editing that tells you how to do it.

Ah, thanks, figured I was missing a beat, not the first time. Good, will switch over to the wiki where it belongs and link there when accomplished. This morning looking at wiki stumbled across the TestFiles https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/TestFiles page, which is right where some of the above links belong (and some can be abandoned), so won't need to create a new page after all.
