We'd need a lot more information before anyone could begin to accurately diagnose your troubles, but rest assured that Sigil is NOT in the habit of not saving an epub when save is clicked.
Offhand, I'd guess you're confusing the original files you started with, with the final product that Sigil creates: a special zip archive (with many files contained within) with an .epub extension. Sometimes it's hard for beginners to understand that you're not using Sigil to edit all the individual files from your computer that you imported into Sigil. You're editing the new copies you added to your epub container. You reopen the EPUB you saved to continue editing ... not your original files. |

Is it possible you had the starting file open in another program? You should have gotten a message to the effect 'Could not save, reason...'
A possible solution (if closing the other program does not help), is to SAVE AS :new name |

Also, you need to actually save before closing the program. It will not automatically save your progress.

There was also the issue with newer Mac OSes cleaning up temporary files automatically. If you left Sigil open all day/night/weekend (with unsaved edits), its scratch directory could concievably be wiped--thus losing any unsaved work. That's why an option was added to the preferences to define a custom temp location for Sigil to use for its scratch directory.

All of these correct replies aside... I would HIGHLY recommend saving your work more than once a day. I make it a habit to save every few minutes, or right before doing a large Search/Replace.

Remember those old Sierra adventures? When you died, some games actually put on the screen 'Remember, save early, save often'. Somehow that credo stuck also with other things than games...

Okay. Now I feel old. On my old CP/M NorthStar, which I used in my word processing business, I used WordStar (why was everything -Star?), and I would tell my assistants, "Don't forget to KS-QP!" (Control-K brought up the file menu, S saved, Control-Q did something that the P brought you back to where you were working before.) Now, it's just a reflex. Take a drink of coffee, Control-S. Scratch my nose, Control-S.
Sorry. Just had to reminisce. |

WordStar 7 (and perhaps some earlier iterations) either saves by default every 10 seconds or so, or some time in the distant past I tweaked it to autosave.
I have successfully booted WS from DOS to Windows 3 to Win 95 to ME to XP to Vista to Win 7 to Win 10. Alas I can no longer tweak it, so I am stuck with the tailoring I did some years ago, and I have lost the ability to print from the program or to do very much in the way of copy and paste to/from Windows. (Win 7 and Win 10 require an interface called vDos.) But it's still the best word processor / text editor ever sold. Very few Windows programs support the WS command keys now, the exceptions being Word itself (a $35 add-in from Mike Petrie) and NoteTab Pro. If there are others, I'd love to know about them, especially if there's a Notepad-like text editor. |
