Assuming the Kobo Mini is like all the other Kobos, then no for standard epubs. However, if you use calibre you can send your standard epubs to the Mini as kepubs. Then you'd have a double-tap zoom option for your images.

Out of curiosity, why is this feature only available with kepubs? Is it a product of the format, or some kind of jerky incentive to buy and use ebooks from the Kobo store?
My entire library is in standard epub format, and I'd rather not convert them; I find it surprising that the feature can't be added for epubs. |

This is a wild guess (David or Peter might know better), but the formats use two different rendering engines and I'd guess Kobo mainly takes what they're given when it comes to the RMSDK which is used for ePub's and only really digs into it if there's a bug of some sort. I'd assume they spend most of their development time working on the Access renderer instead where they can have more control of things in general. I personally prefer kePub and since using Calibre to send my ePub's to the device is set up to convert things on the fly leaving the original ePub in my library unchanged I don't even notice that I have to convert things.

I have Koreader and CoolReader running on my mini.
With Koreader I was able to rotate and scale an image in an epub to fill the screen but no larger. Couldn't manage to do the same with CoolReader though. |

As AnemicOak said, there are two renderers involved and the surrounding application to present them. For epubs, the Adobe RMSDK is used. From comments made in a couple of places, I think that interacting the RMSDK is not the most pleasant thing to do. It's possible they can't do something like the image zoom, it's hard enough to make it not worthwhile. But, there is probably an element of having function that is available for kepubs only. Whether that meant they didn't look at implementing it for epub, or discovered it was hard or impossible and decided not to do it, I don't know. |
