Moon + Reader Restore Problem

I did a factory reset on my tablet today, as I was experiencing some pretty bad system lag. Before I did the reset, I backed up everything, including doing a new backup in Moon Reader, backed up to my dropbox, which I've been doing for years, with no issue.

I did as I always do, updated everything on the tablet first, installed dropbox, installed Moon+, added my books back, and then went to restore. It gave me the prompt to link to dropbox, I hit accept, and the app closes. I reopen the app, hit restore, and it seems to work, only my settings don't ever come back. I've tried using the most recent backup, as well as older backups, and none work. It took me forever to get it how I wanted it, and I haven't messed with the settings in years, always relying on the backups I created.

Can anyone help me figure out how to get my settings back from my backups, or am I stuck with trying to figure it all out on my own (and never getting it quite right)?

I am not sure that Moon saves the app settings to dropbox, it may only save the book details. ( though when I moved to a new tablet and did the backup + restore thng I am pretty sure I got my tap zones restored ) I suggest contact the author, and while you wait, try to open the files in dropbox with an exploratory program like NOtepad++ and see what is there.
other possibilities, 1. maybe that backup was made with a different ( older) version of moon. 2, maybe the older tablet had stuff ( like fonts) that cannot restore as the new tablet does not have them, so the restore aborts.

It's always restored all my settings before, just not this time. And every time I retry it, it always tells me I must link to DB first, which I do, hit restore, it says it does it, but nothing changes.

Me too! When I got my new phone last week I installed Moon+ and tried to restore settings from my last backup on Dropbox and it didn't work. I didn't give me the problems it gave you. It seemed to work just like it's always worked and there was no problem but when I got into Moon+ most of my settings weren't restored. That's never happened before and I've done a number of restores in the past.

It did restore a few settings. I don't recall which ones. Offhand I'd say it got about 25% of them. I just set the rest manually and it wasn't really a big problem. I hope this isn't the start of a trend with Moon+, an app that's always worked beautifully.

Let the developer know. They are quick to fix bugs if reported.

yes contact the developer, and send or share the dropbox backup file. it could be a version thing. backup made by version A, restore to version B partially fails...

Try putting a copy of the backup file into wherever Moon+ stores it for backup to SD. You can see where it puts it by doing a backup. If your only problem is Dropbox that should work.

if dropbox was reinstalled and accepted Moon as an approved app, then I very much doubt it is a dropbox fault.

you could go into dropbox via PC , remove moon's permission to use, then connect again from moon+ and go through the approval process again, but I doubt that will change things.

only the app author is likely to solve this, so send him the dropbox backup file and the app version used for backup & for restores, tell us what he says. I am pretty sure there is still a bug report function built into the app, somewhere.
looking at my own dropbox - I have 4 backups, each is a very small single file - under 200k. I have not tried very hard to "read" the contents. they are gibberish in notepad & I don't have notepad++ currently installed. Each file name has a date and a device identifier e.g. 2016-12-24 (SM-T800).mrpro
FYI I keep a copy of my preferred moon+ background image in the same dropbox folder location - as that took ages to find & I'd want it for any new device

I'll see if I can find the bug report and give it a shot. I did try copying the backup file into Moon Reader manually, and it did nothing. Neither did copying it to the main memory and "restoring" from that one. Nothing ever changes to my old settings.

I couldn't find a place to report bugs inside the app, but I did find an email address on the app's website, so I sent an email. I'll post back here what I find out.

I did try again today, uninstalling the app, restarting my tablet, reinstalling the app, re-allowing dropbox, restore, etc etc, and nothing. Tried the backup I'd made on the tablet's main memory, and that didn't work either, so now I'm back to bumbling around trying to figure out my settings again. Restore just plain won't work, no matter how I do it, or which backup file/location I try.

I just tried and had the same problems you did including the Dropbox hiccup. I restored from one of my backups and it didn't restore my settings even though I didn't get an error. This is one of the reasons I always root my devices. I restored app + data using Titanium Backup and everything's back the way I wanted.

I don't know how to root my Zenpad, and worry about bricking it. I rooted my Nexus 7 (2012) and ended up stuck at that particular android number forever, because I couldn't update or unroot it.

But thanks for showing that it's not just me having this issue!

Oh and I don't get an error message, either. It looks like it works fine, but nothing changes. Also, every time I try it again, it asks me to link to dropbox first, then "restores"(but doesn't) and so I try again, and it asks me to link to DB, restore, etc etc.

i guess I was lucky then, when it worked for me a few weeks back. I guess a recent app update has broken it. the app ( on android) does update regularly.
maybe affected folks should post their app version, and the name of the file within dropbox that they ar trying to restore from. may give us clues.
i think the email from within the app may also have been removed. it used to be possible to take a bug report screenshot and send it, all from within the app

I heard back from the developers, who sent me a link to an updated test version, which seems to have fixed my issues, so thanks for nudging me in that direction.

ETA: Correction: my visual settings (font type, size etc) didn't restore when I did it from Dropbox, but they did restore when I did a restore from the tablet's sd card.
