Leaving a Kindle device/the Kindle ecosystem - processing Notes and Highlights?
I wonder what can I do with my Notes and Highlights in pieces on my Kindle device, after leaving that device, and the whole ecosystem.
To make things easy, everything is DRM-free on the device. So, it's just .mobi and their respective .mbp files which are required to do something with them. What are my options? Can I get everything to the Kindle Web when having only the files at hand, but not the device? Oh, and what if the .mobi files were .azw3 files, would that complicate things more? First you should check 'My Clippings.txt'. It will have a copy of all annotations you've made, unless you deleted it at some point.
If you side-loaded everything (did not use Send To Kindle service to store your documents in cloud) then there isn't any cloud backup for your notes and highlights. If you did use Send To Kindle, then you have cloud backup for both the documents and their annotations. At any time, you can register a Kindle app (e.g. on a cheap Android tablet or iOS device) and you can download the document to it and Export notes for that document as an email attachment. The Export feature on newer Kindles does not work with 'personal documents', however. I believe newer Fire tablets support Export as well but I don't have one to verify if it works with personal documents. |

I always delete the 'My Clippings.txt,' after having 100s of pieces on the device, I don't think it's the best way to get my notes and highlights. If I understand you correctly, this is how I should proceed:
I keep a mirror of my 'documents' folder of my Kindle on my computer. In case my Kindle dies, gets lost or stolen, I borrow a clean Kindle from a friend for a day (this is possible), copy my documents folder onto that Kindle, attach an Amazon account, upload everything to the Kindle Cloud (Is that possible? This page doesn't mention I can sync from a Kindle device to the Kindle Could). Then, I will have access to my documents, notes, and highlights, from Kindle Cloud Reader, and the Kindle iOS and Android apps, on whichever device I sync my Kindle Could. Is my understanding correct? Thanks. |

I used Daley_Klippings application (Mac version) to transform My Clippings.txt into CSV and run my own Excel macro to reformat and fit to my needs. When the My Clippings.txt has been > 200kb, I deleted and keep the backup in notebook.
