Went from Onxy N96 to Ipad Pro 12"
It took a few months from my first purchase of the Onxy N96, that I ended up returning, to buy the Ipad Pro 12".
First, I have to say that initially I thought the Ipad Pro was WAY TOO BIG. I saw it at the store and thought it was bulky and HEAVY. But after getting it and using for a week I really like it. What sold me was watching various YouTube videos of people actually reading PDFs on one side of the screen and taking notes on the other size. Also you can watch video lecture on a floating window and take notes at the same time. -You can surf the web at full size and its fast -You can multi task from viewing PDFs on one side and taking notes on the other side. -Reading books/PDFs is AWESOME!!! It's freak'n fast compared to the Onxy. Pages turn instantly. You can highlight with the apple pencil and it actually works with out any effort. You can book mark. The pdf files are organized and all the files are synced across devices. -When you take notes with the apple pencil it actually works. When I was using the built in app with the Onxy it was like going back in time to the Palm Pilot. You can actually take notes on the Ipad and record the lecture at the same time so you never miss anything. It works great. -You don't have to mess with all that stupid zoom in crap. You take notes at full size and it syncs up to all my devices. Just works. It also converts my handwriting to searchable text. -You can actually touch type on the thing. -Sound quality is pretty good. I have no idea why the big pro is not taking off like hotcakes. Finally found the perfect PDF reading machine/note taking machine. Took me a year to RE-find it. LOL |

Well, the day you can try a surface pro then, you'll go bananas.
an ereader is not a tablet, they fit different purposes and a tablet cannot replace a eink device for reading long times. |

if you read a lot, on a device that has no e-ink screen, sooner or later you will lose your eyes. if you read not so much, i think you are good with the ipad.

That's utter nonsense. There are no studies that show someone will lose his or her eyesight due to reading on a back-lit device. Please do your research before posting such utter falsehoods. |

Because I ran out of room to list all my devices! I also have two older Kindle readers and one older device that is neither eInk OR backlit. I also have an iPad and a Kindle Fire (an older one, however). I choose to read on both, but the allegation he made that it will "lose your eyes" [sic] is utter BS. One's eyesight will not be lost. Some readers may prefer to read on a backlit device. Some readers may experience eyestrain (I don't), but to categorically state that you will lose your eyesight is laughable nonsense. |

Bring on the tin hats, folks! Your assertion (see your original post) is that one will lose one's eyesight. This is the biggest pile of BS that I've ever heard. In fact, I may need to wear some special boots when I read a post like that. Back-lit devices, such as computers and tablets CAN cause some dry eyes and some eye strain IF one reads at length and IF the light is set too high. Additionally, studies have shown that reading on some tablets at night MAY interrupt circadian sleep patterns in some individuals. But I've yet to hear of someone losing his eyesight from reading on a back-lit device (as you assert, although you later fine-tuned your song-and-dance to reflect a case of hyperbole) - unless one drops the darn device on an exposed eyeball while reading in bed. I can see that happening, sure, especially if one's holding a LAPTOP above one's head! OUCH! Again: Get your tin hats here, folks! And I DO believe in Santa Claus. My son tells me he exists, and I believe my son! To think otherwise would be.....criminally insane. My faith in Santa Claus is firmly invested in the film "The Polar Express." I continue to hear the bell, even at my age. Last edited by Dr. Drib; 12-08-2016 at 08:32 PM. |

I bought an M96 around two years ago, however, it ended up being used very less.
Now recently, I got a Samsung Tab 10.1 with stylus for myself. Compared to PC monitors, it hardly ever causes any eye strain for me. Using Xodo PDF for PDF annotations & Inkredible Pro for note taking. Xodo (a lot lighter/simpler than EZpdf/Moon+) can do on the fly page crop & pan, while even my horrible handwriting looks excellent with Inkredible. ![]() ![]() It's not intended as an advertisement, however, in terms of stylus, the capacitive styli didn't look that good to me. Lenovo's any-pen technology is okay, but none of them is as good as Samsung's s-pen, except Apple of course. There's also Microsoft with its Surface line & the N-trig pen (quite good), however, their Surface line is hobbled with the Intel Atom processors, which is not sufficient for full fledged Windows. On the other side, Surface Pro line is good in terms of hardware specs, but it then is too big at 12 inches screen size. Also got an iPad Pro 9.7 with Apple Pencil for the wife. We looked at the 12.9 version, but it was too bulky. 9.7 is a lot more portable. Not for me either of them though, just too many restrictions on the platform, its either the iOS way or the highway. M96 is just sitting there gathering dust. No regrets though, it was a good experiment, its just that other devices offer a lot more features. Every one in a while I do take it out, charge the battery, flash the new firmware & play around with it, but its no longer my main reading device. The new high-resolution screens are not that bad for the eyes. I always apply the blue filter to make the screen more yellow than the blue, it seems to help to avoid eye strain. ![]() Jp Last edited by japinder; 12-21-2016 at 11:47 AM. |

Hey guys, you won't believe what happened.
I needed something for boiling water. So I went to a shop and bought a shovel. I wasn't very happy with it, water kept spilling and it was difficult to light a fire with one hand while keeping the shovel in the other. Then someone told me why not try a kettle. So I did and it blew my socks off. I could totally boil 2 litres of water with such an ease now. So much faster too! Don't buy shovels, they suck. Kettles all the way! ![]() Sorry, I couldn't find 'Kettles' section so I'm sticking this into 'Onyx' forum, hope it's ok... |

Machinogodzilla. Hahaha.
I have to say that ereaders are meant to be a single purpose device versus a multipurpose ipad. I do find that the ereader screens are much nicer and gentler. Having a single purpose device helps me to focus, and I end up reading better with an eBook reader. As for notetaking while reading, I use Hovernote and I also use Floating Apps Pro. I think this is potentially superior to an ipad, though might not be better than a Windows based tablet. |

I think that you are a very lucky guy if you can use ipad without feeling strain to your eyes. The ipad or samsung tablets are much more functional than ereaders. But unfortunately or maybe fortunately the tablet screens are not good for my eyes and not only fo mine. I could not endure reading from ipad and even my big good destop pc hp monitor is not good for my eyes for long reading. Yes, the brightness can be and should be adjusted and yet there remains something affecting the eyes. There is nothing like this with the ereader. I am using dpt s1 and the more i use it the more i prefer it to lcd screen. The page turning is a second or two longer than with the ipad, but the eyes do not feel as affected as after reading fron lcd.

There are studies with school children in South Korea. They proof that the children which are reading a lot in books or on monitors, are getting farsightedness because they don't play enough outside where the eyes are trained to see things far away. It is especially a problem for children younger than 17 because the eyes aren't fully developed yet. If you are older that that it's not that tragic but one should watch out of the window every 20 minutes and focus some remote items. Obviously that has nothing to do with LCD displays but with the prolonged impact on short distance to the reading device (book, e-book, tablet, ...). I suggest you don't insult other posters by claming they have a 'tin foil hat'. That's very rude. Last edited by joblack; 12-28-2016 at 12:58 PM. |
