![]() ![]() Europeana will launch in November 2008, bringing us digitized books, films, paintings, newspapers, sounds and archives from Europe’s greatest collections. Will it be a new Quaero or is it for real? Let's hope for the best, wait and see. ![]() Quote:

And what is "Quaero" - (other than a Latin verb, obviously!)?

Looks like it could be a fascinating site, thanks for the link.
![]() I could imagine using it as a reference when reading foreign classics - but once you've entered to look up one item, you could end up spending all day there. ![]() |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quaero
"Quaero (Latin: I seek) is a European research and development program which has the goal of developing multimedia and multilingual indexing and management tools for professional and general public applications (such as search engines)[1]. The European Commission approved the aid granted by France on 11 March 2008... The above exerpt doesn't really provide sufficient explanation, so if you're really curious, I'd click on the link. Cheers, Marc |

It ought to have been a Multimedia-Multilanguage Knowledge retrieval engine.
But when it's been seen as a competitor to giant Internet corporations, it's been taken down by politicians, under the cloak of french nationalism (some called it a "french search engine"), german disagreement about technology and generic fund shortage. Sad story. ![]() |

Interesting site, pity some of the links to the libraries either don't work or are very slow at loading up.
Wonder where the likes of PG will sit with this? Duplication of effort is not necessarily a wise thing... |
