Lock-Up on Build 708 Install (512MB)!!!

Yep. A friend got her *replacement* Cybook from Bookeen after she attempted to install Build 708 on her 64MB Cybook. It locked up after the initial splash screen and during the three-dot splash screen and nothing she tried would fix the problem. So Bookeen "upgraded" her to a 512MB Cybook.

Of course, even though this occurred just last week, the new Cybook came with Build 681. So she thought to install Build 708. Shouldn't be a problem, yes? This is the *new* model and should take to Build 708 without problem, yes?

No.

It's now in *my* possession and I'm staring at a device which freezes at the *initial*, big-Cybook-image splash screen. LED stays glowing, but no move to the Library. I've, since receiving it this morning, tried to complete the upgrade process using both Build 708 and Build 708 Fmt. (6MB and 16MB versions, respectively) No go! Freezes at the same point.

Any suggestions? No, it doesn't even boot far enough to be recognized by the PC when connected via the USB cable. It will *charge*, but the "Connected" screen won't come up if the power is ON.

Intresting.

Was the upgrade file the same for both the tries, or did she re download it when she decided to upgrade the replacement. Also, did she try using the same SD card on both?
That look likely culprit

Have you tried reflashing it with one of the older builds like 538. While it does not work correctly on the 512 models, It did install on my new Cybook when the newer firmware was not installing. if it installs, it will be easy to overwrite it with a new version like 678/685 etc.

She used 708 fmt. And used the same file for both attempts. And the same SD card - properly formatted to FAT32.

I've now used both 708 and 708Fmt. But I can't even get to the point where it recognizes the SD card is in the slot because it won't finish even booting the OS.

If I could at least get to the point where it recognizes the SD card, I'd format the device and re-install Build 538 and work up from there. But it won't even get to the point I can do that. It's locked up tighter than a drum at the initial boot phase. And I'm loathe to crack the case as this is a *NEW* Cybook, less than two weeks old.

I'm considering the possibility that - as she attempted this while it just came from the box - it may well have lost battery power during firmware installation. I'm now giving it a *full* charge.

Well, if it is recognized as a raw disk (not the same as one formatted partition recognized) you can always reformat the internal drive.

Tompe,

No. As I stated quite clearly, it's not recognized at *all*. Period. Does not complete the boot-up cycle. And I'm not about to crack it open as it's not *my* ebook reader and it's *still* under warranty. So stop having those crazy notions!

If Bookeen can't come up with a way for it to jump-install past the damaged install by a piece of firmware I can put on the SD card, then they're gonna have to take it back and swap out again. *This* time I'll send *MY* 512MB Cybook - the one I got a month ago - up to my friend as it's already got Build 708 installed, and I'll keep the fixed-or-replaced unit that Bookeen sends back. I've still got a 64MB unit to read on until the replacement unit arrives - thank GHU!

Have you tried a different SD card? I had a problem trying to install 708 but it worked with a different SD card. The card that didn't work on the Cybook, works fine on other things.

You did not state that clearly. So what does the system log file say when it tries to find the hardware? In Linux at least that would give you some additional information.

Yes. Several cards. All of which have successfully operated with Cybooks and EB-100s before. *AND* I reformatted to FAT32 as I always do. Nope, it's in the device.

Running Windows XP Home SP3. Just doesn't *SHOW*. And no system log.

And, of course, Bookeen hasn't responded. That's the *one thing* I most hate about dealing with Bookeen - As I'm on the US *West* coast, they're always closed for the day by the time I get up in the morning.
